Mastodon v4.2.0-beta2 presents hashtag bar list on the bottom. In the original UI they are just text. I wanted to make them distinctive so they are presented as a pill style on #MastodonBirdUI. The change is present in 1.7.2rc2-nightly version which fully supports beta2. Proper release coming soon. #BirdUI#Mastodon#UI
Swedish UX designer Amin Amini is curating a deep accessibility repository. He calls it “A11y Cat.” Clever, eh? And useful! There’s so much stuff in there!
There's one pervasive #UI anti-pattern that I call "intrusive UI", although I'm not sure if it has a more widely accepted name.
For example, #Mastodon automatically converts CamelCase hash tags to lowercase, thus destroying my effort to make them friendly to screen reader users.
Web browsers automatically select the entire content of the URL field when I focus on it, so when I want to edit the URL, I have to de-select it first.
Many word processors and mobile apps replace -- with —, so typing UNIX command there is outright painful.
Who could guess that one way to improve a UI could be not to interfere with user's actions?
Only feedback after watching the vid: Please, don't let AI handle #a11y .. maybe take inspiration from Ian 'Hixie' Hickson (Google Doc 😬 link at the bottom): https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=34612696
On every video player (AppleTV, Disney+, YouTube, Amazon Prime, Netflix, all of them) — no matter how long they persist, the on-screen controls persist 3 times longer than they need to. #ux#ui#video
We have reached the “Late Stage Microwave” era of software #UI / #UX. NOBODY likes the way their microwave works; It’ll have a numpad or a dial, but not both, and it defaults to weight mode (who even uses that!?). The interface is based on off the shelf parts and has nothing to do with the user experience. The ROM code was written in 1992 and it is never going to be improved — but the chassis is available in white, black or a colour you don’t like!
One thing I think Mastodon is missing is "hover cards" where you can get info on a user by just hovering over their username. kbin does this, Mastodon does not. So on Mastodon you need to visit a user's profile to get basic info about them and your relationship.
(Here's what it looks like for @joe account over on kbin.)
