An entrepreneur -- who doesn't yet want to be publicly identified -- ran a session here at #IIW why he's pivoting his company out of the #SSI Self-sovereign Identity / #VC Verifiable Credential space after years of trying to make a business there.
It was extremely interesting and I hope he will publish his lessons learned both for the #identity community and any new technology market really that has similar challenges.
P.S. Much resonated with my reasons why I never got deep into SSI myself.

In total, the doc showed that the trust transferred $4.8m to #Postolnikov’s acct….
The reason for the #ESFamilyTrust’s creation remains unknown. Aside from the #money that went to #TrumpMedia, the trust’s statements show the trust has directly invested money w/only two other companies: $10.8m to Eleven Ventures LLC, a #VC firm, & $1m to Wedbush Securities, a #wealth management firm.

Have you noticed, practically the only thing VCs know how to talk about is scale?
They have very little to say about going from one person to two, from two to three and so on. Or any of the other "first spark" and "earliest days" stuff really. Not in any real depth.
All they know is how to scale up with growth, because that's all dumb money knows how to do.
Any VCs that haven't made scale their sole brand can rest assured that you're not the type of #VC I'm talking about here.
The bad thing is, I would actually agree with the systemic descriptions and the connotations of #TechnoFeudalism. If you factor in the #TESCREAL dimension of #Elmo and the #PayPalMafia et al, you even gave the medieval "beliefs" dimension. And no-one will argue that if you receive millions of dollars of seed capital, you owe your #liege aka #VC#fealty. And, yes they collect rent, and yes, they either inherited the "rights" or acquired them, charging rent.
Congratulations @kepano for finding a revenue and growth model that fits your product, company and users.
Sadly that path does not work for everyone. Depending on what you’re trying to build, the development comes with significant upfront costs, where you need investments. As governments usually don’t support commercial developments much, all that’s left is #VC. And as with any tool, it can be a great choice, if used correctly.
@kepano However as you say, many people chose it for the wrong reasons. Often as a way of “getting rich quickly”, not realizing all the consequences and implications and expectations that has. And this is where things get ugly and we often end up in situations where protecting shareholder value is prioritized over everything else.
But, if you know what you’re doing and have the right people on board, #VC money can be one of the best things to help you be successful.
@kepano so I guess what I’m saying is, we need less #vc bashing, more entrepreneurial education. Learning about both sides of the coin, the good and the bad so that founders can chose what is right for them, may that be bootstrapping or all the different forms of external funding.
