My real worry with Google's voyage into enshittification (thanks to Cory Doctorow @pluralistic the term) is YouTube.

Through YT, for the past 15 years, the world has basically entrusted Google to be the custodian of pretty much our entire global video archive.

There's countless hours of archived footage — news reports, political speeches, historical events, documentaries, indie films, academic lectures, conference presentations, rare recordings, concert footage, obscure music — where the best or only copy is now held by Google through YouTube.

So what happens if maintaining that archival footage becomes unprofitable?

What are we all using for video chat in 2023?

The last time I tried to make video chat work with people, we dived between jitsi, facebook messenger, zoom... until something worked well enough. what are people using here now? Jitsi? Google Meet? Whatsapp? Facebook Messenger? Zoom? Skype? Facetime, somehow? The builtin thing in matrix that used to be jitsi but I think they...

just announced that going forward, any account not logged into for two years gets deleted.

This means huge amounts of rare or unique is about to disappear from as accounts get flagged as inactive, such as when the user dies. Families' (often posted by an older relative for their family's benefit), historical footage, rare clips, etc. What an incalculable loss to human and culture!

If there are videos important to you on someone else's video channel, find a way to download them. And if you have rare of historical importance, consider leaving it to institutional or lending it to archives for digital preservation.

Any electronics hackers?

I got this cheap portable video light, and it comes with some preset light animations.

This has a USB-C port, maybe it exposes something more than power?

Maybe it'd be possible to get access to this thing's underlying software and reprogram it? ;)

A chat on here yesterday reminded me of the 1980's film The Apple which is... well... something.

I made a few gifs from it a few years back & thought I'd lost them, but my digital hoarding habit is victorious.

Going to do a wee thread of them, as they make me giggle so much they will surely entertain someone else as well.

I don't usually just grab clips from other media, but it's quite an obscure film & I'd not seen any others circling about so...

You know when you have a video loop, but to make it loop something disappears in an improbable manner?

And you think, that's a shame, because I really like this little clip.

And you could crop it so, for example, a bird doesn't disappear in mid-flight, but then it looks unbalanced so you need to find some unobtrusive way for the bird to disappear so it appears natural?

Yeah. That.

I think I need a quiet lie down.

A short video loop of the sea splashing up some rocks. In the foreground there is long grass. On the left the cliffs of the headland. A gull flies in from the right hand side most of the way across the image. At that point the cliff, which has cartoon eyes and a slither of a mouth drawn on, opens its mouth wide, flipping the clifftop up, and eating the bird. Because why else would it disappear at that point? It made no sense.

How do you capture your videos?
My camera records .MOV format, that must be converted to .MP4, often too big to share.

I don't get the same focus on videos, as my camera tries to refocus each time it moves.

I found (for me) what works best, is to shoot still photos and stitch them back into video. Takes awhile without a computer.

The moon is descending below the treeline. It moves top left to bottom right, against the tree branches

0500h- so peaceful and quiet...

Happy to , many celebrations today.
(Not in this part of rural Halifax)

I just had to share this: I pulled out my camera, so you could see and hear, that there's no movement, no sound, a still ocean surface. I waited for the well pump, in the basement, to stop, and began recording...
Just as our alarm went off. ?
(GM @MaJ1 I'm watching the sunrise, sipping some caffeine, & planning a coup 😂)

A clear horizon before dawn. Orange bar of color follows the dark treeline across the harbour. The ocean is smooth, like glass, behind me the moon and stars are visible. It's so tranquil, and then you hear it? Quiet time near the ocean is rare.. BTW, duck.

Just sit right back and you'll hear a tale 🎶 , a tale of a fateful trip, 🎶
that started from this port,
aboard this tiny ship (canoe, actually).

So we're back, let me tell you how our day went?
There's only one high tide today, and it was sunny and fairly warm, so we took the canoe out fishing.

Here's what it looked like when we left 🎵 for a three hour tour. ⛵

Look how calm harbour is?

../2

A quick 360° of the harbor upon our departure this morning. The water doesn't have a ripple, and the daylight forms reflections that give a mirage type image at the edges of the shoreline. And the video looks to the open ocean, and not a cloud or a wave can be seen

Red squirrels in the Queen Elizabeth forest in the Trossachs.

LOOK AT THEIR TUFTY FLUFFINESS!

Taken with a hand held camera because I wasn't expecting to video, I was there to get snaps of the birds from the bird hide, but they were were just so cute.

Also cheeky, stealing ALL THE NUTS.

Video footage of red squirrels on a tree trunk with a bird nut feeder attached to it. They circle around it, chasing each other, before one stops to have a good old munch of nuts, before the other reappears and they dash off up the tree.

Made a rambly 30+ minute video with shaky webcam footage documenting my final moments of 3DS online tonight.

It's currently published on YouTube, trying to setup a PeerTube account so maybe I can post more stuff like this on the fediverse in the future. I'll link that in a reply if and when it happens.
