I've used #MacOS for my day-to-day work for a good 35yrs. I've had a couple of brief clusters of years where I had to use a Windows at work (but still had MacOS at home).

I've installed #Linux on many old machines to extend their lives a bit, sorting through distros, finding one that would work on limited resources with good results. Fun stuff.

But I'm curious to ask a QUESTION about new computer purchases…

If the whole Windows Recall thing scares you and you are looking for options: For many people Linux just does the trick. If you need a browser, some office stuff, maybe a bit of image/media management, Linux absolutely got you covered. It probably will be annoying or something might be broken but that is the same with every operating system.

But before you install something, maybe have a chat with someone who knows a bit more about it to help you navigate the choices and to ensure that your workload is actually supported on Linux.

But it's no longer an OS just for experts. You can do almost anything graphically and a lot of shit just works.

@JRepin@mstdn.io avatar

@svenjacobs @tante For a rolling release distro Tumbleweed is one of the best. They do a lot of QA testing before letting packages in so it is quite stable for a rolling release distro. It has snapper nicely integrated with btrfs file system and if something would go wrong with an update you can simply revert to old snapshot. YaST configuration tool allows to make a lot of configuration from the graphical user interface. Most of the rest is nicely covered by KDE System Settings.

Our commitment to the fediverse is here to stay.

Today, we launched our new Mastodon instance. It will ensure a privacy-focused space to engage with and get the latest from our Commissioners, departments, and the official voices of the Commission.

We want to thank @Mastodon for stewarding us and helping us make this possible.

Fostering European digital players is vital to our strategy for a stronger .

This is a unique opportunity to grow the community even more. Let's get there!

@EUCommission @Mastodon Great to hear this and also I hope you would do a lot more more to promote Mastodon and do more to encourage people to move from closed surveillance platforms run by pro[to]fascist sociopaths to open privacy and freedom respecting platforms like this.

Well, this is a transcendent level of evil: Facebook bought a VPN company and deployed it, in part, to spy on its competitor's users.

https://techcrunch.com/2024/03/26/facebook-secret-project-snooped-snapchat-user-traffic/

It's a reminder that VPNs have their own risks, beyond technical ones if operated incompetently -- namely, that you have to trust the VPN company itself.

UPDATED to reflect which users were being spied on.

@FediPact The team might have good intentions, but their bosses/owners and the parent corporation Meta absolutely don't. And we know well whose way it is in the end. Too bad the team does not see this or maybe they choose to ignore it which is even worse.

How the military keeps its CO2 footprint secret
https://yewtu.be/watch?v=Q2ZUrzGohCI

"It's almost impossible to pin down how much the military emits globally. We are talking about a sector with a budget of 2.2 trillion dollars using helicopters, tanks, ships, fighter planes. And none of these CO2 emissions have to be reported. This is a story about one of the biggest blindspots of climate change and what we can do to change that."

S svobodno in odprtokodno programsko opremo nam ni treba biti odvisni od usmiljenja nobenega BigTech fevdalca in klečeplazenja pri njih, da bi imeli svoj ljubi program v slovenščini.

Is it possible to show the name of Firefox tabs in the KDE volume mixer?

As shown below, it appears that all Firefox tabs are just named “Firefox” within the volume mixer. This doesn’t exactly make differentiating them very easy. Is it possible to make the volume mixer show the names of the tabs instead? If not, is there any feature in the works for this that anyone may be aware of?...
