Louder for those in the back.

There is nothing "innovative" about control of capital resources.

Besides which, those who do the actual creating are just working for a living. They don't have a profit motive, they just want to get paid, whether the funding comes publicly or privately.

"This is not subjective. We all saw it. Plenty of leaders today try to convince the masses we did not see what we saw, but our eyes don’t deceive. (If leaders began a yearslong campaign today to convince us that the Baltimore bridge did not collapse Tuesday morning, would you ever believe them?) Trust your eyes. Trump on Jan. 6 launched the most serious threat to our system of government since the Civil War. You know that. New on Assigned, I found out earlier today that Jonathan Haidt, the author of the splashy new pop-psych book about how smartphones are bad for kids, believes and is promoting a fringe theory that kids are becoming due to social media as well.

Haidt told PBS that "clusters of girls" are developing gender dysphoria when they never had it before.

The problem, of course, is that there's no research whatsoever backing that up.

Two weeks ago, a build of Mastodon's Web interface removed two features which impacted me, other power users and some folks with accessibility issues.

And many of us complained 'cause, well, it kinda sucked.

But @renchap and the developers listened to us! And they didn't just back out those changes. No, they restored the functionality integrated with other new features.

So, I wanted to publicly thank them for all that hard work and landing it last week. Y'all rock! 💖

People have spent years downplaying COVID by saying "it's just the flu." This is reckless for many reasons, one of those being that new flu strains pose a constant threat to public health. I really hope we don't have to experience directly how devastating the flu can be.

Unions boost their members’ wages by 10-15%.

In fact, union contracts negotiated last year secured the highest average first-year wage increases since tracking began in 1988.

This is why we must continue the fight to build back union power.

High-income households would tend to be the biggest winners, lower-income households hurt the most

Now this day has a whole new meaning for me as a woman. And it's my first that I celebrate publicly since coming out to everyone on June 21 of last year.

To all my siblings, I see you. Even if complete visibility isn't possible for you right now. You still matter. You're still loved. And you're still trans. Never doubt that. 🏳️‍⚧️🫂💖

I've said it a thousand times, corporate stock buy backs should be illegal. Just watched an interview with Sully Sullenburger re the situation at Boeing.
"They spent a lot of money on stock buybacks instead of re-investing in safety and engineering"

Stock buybacks were at one time illegal because it creates an artificial market environment. It's insider trading on steroids. Governments everywhere need to stop abdicating their regulatory responsibilies. It's literally killing people.

Cool new risk assessment tool. Called ARIA (Airborne Risk Indoor Assessment), it comes from . (Look, they say it's airborne--finally.) 😆
It asks for LOTS of info (date, nation and city, Enter temp, humidity, dimensions of room, occupancy, duration, assumed number of attendees infected, if you've been vaccinated, etc.) and provides an estimate of risk:

Maybe some people are "sad", because they live in a society that is actually prejudiced against them, and trying harder isn't going to fix it for them.

gentrifiedrose,

@RickiTarr Its sounds bizarre to white people & to an alarming number of POC but I truly feel alone when I am interviewing for a job that I am over qualified for and the white interviewers ask me questions about my age, marital status and race. Although dramatic, it feels like I am being hit by a truck every single time. Its inexplicable but I need a job to survive. I feel like I am at risk each time an interviewer asks if I have children or what country my parents were born. I'm always scared.

Ukraine has had to rely on natively produced weapons to fill in the equipment gaps, like drones, but it is not enough.

I don't need another epidemic to track, but you may have heard about in cows in the US. Some info:

  • May be rapidly spreading. Found in cattle in multiple states recently (NM, ID, OH, MI, KS, TX)
  • MAY be spreading cow-to-cow as cattle are imported from other states.
  • Low risk to humans (so far): Pasteurization kills the virus in milk produced by an infected cow
  • Risk to dairy business: Infections are spoiling milk and causing limited disease in mostly older animals. (1/3)

Turns out the mountain depicted on ’s CON jersey is in fact the Matterhorn in Switzerland, not a peak in the rockies.
Of note, Switzerland has had a national carbon tax since 2008, already set at $180 CAD a tonne which is $10 more than Canada’s 2030 target.
Oh the irony 🤔😳🥹🤣

In case you feel like climbing on board a 787 or 737 Max in the next little while... this might disabuse you of such a consideration:

“Discussing Swampy’s death and the whistleblower lawsuit he left behind, the longtime former Boeing executive told me, “I don’t think one can be cynical enough when it comes to these guys.” Did that mean he thought Boeing assassinated Swampy? “It’s a top-secret military contractor, remember; there are spies everywhere,” he replied. More importantly, he added, “there is a principle in American law that there is no such thing as an accidental death during the commission of a felony. Let’s say you rob a bank and while traveling at high speed in the getaway you run down a pedestrian and kill them. That’s second-degree murder at the very least.””

In 6 months, Conservative leader Pierre #Poilievre billed Canadian taxpayers over $3 MILLION in expenses – averaging $562,428.91 per month.

He's been jetting around campaigning nonstop about affordability & food banks while living in a taxpayer-funded mansion with chef, chauffeur & nannies.

Elections #Canada says PP raised $23.3M, almost double the Liberals. So, while the Feds have been running the country, PP has been running across the country building a massive election war chest.

It would be good for someone to write an all-purpose book with the title “It’s More Complicated Than That”. Everyone should buy it and put it on to the desk next to the skull saying Memento Mori.

Then, with that ever-present reminder, we could all go back to talking in terms of the oversimplified concepts we all use to make sense of history, economics and life in general: the Middle Ages, the nuclear family and so on.
