@Sobieck@hachyderm.io

I'm a caretaker for my ill wife. I used to be a programmer. Hopefully I'll be doing that again sometime.

I like computer games. Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup, Dwarf Fortress, and Factorio are my favorites. My dog is Gidget and she is the best.

My avatar is a person who doesn't exist. I'm real though.

Albert Einstein’s first wife Mileva (Mitza) Marić was also a brilliant physicist. They met at the Polytechnic Institute of Zurich, where she had fought for special permissions to attend and where she received higher marks than Albert. Mitza put in as much if not more work on their theories but wasn’t credited because Albert told her their works wouldn’t get published with a woman’s name on them. Many of his lecture notes are in Mitza’s handwriting, and Albert was once heard at a party saying, “I need my wife, she helps solve all of my mathematical problems.” 80% of Einstein’s famous works were published during this marriage, referred to as his “magic years.” Those magic years ended abruptly after they divorced due to his infidelity and abandonment.

I’ve been re-reading all my history books about the Nazis. One thing that strikes me is how hard it was to fight back against Nazism from inside. The normative culture is so strong and everybody is just going along. Ordinary folks, with denouncing their neighbours to the Gestapo. The Gestapo was tiny only 32k. It was the ordinary people that were informing on their neighbours. Ordinary people enabled Nazism.

My parents BOTH got pacemakers. My mother had a stroke & spent a month in the hospital doing rehab. My mom had a Watchman implanted because she couldn't tolerate blood thinners. My father fell down, was in ICU for 4 days, then, went to a nursing rehab for a month. 2 therapists and a nurse came to his house for 1 month. They both have Medicare and a supp. insurance. THEY PAID NOTHING FOR ANY OF THESE INCIDENTS. So, don't ever tell me MEDICARE isn't a good thing. It can be better, sure. But, WTF.

Sobieck,

@Joe_Hill @StillIRise1963 I think people are upset about Medicare Advantage which is a replacement for government run Medicare.

My wife also has Medicare + Supplemental insurance and we love it. I’d never go to an Advantage plan.

I'm not a cartoonist, but if I were, I'd draw one of a bunch of far left folks being marched into Trump Concentration Camp #934 in chains, with one remarking to the other, "At least I didn't vote for Biden!"

Sobieck,
@Sobieck@hachyderm.io avatar

@kkeller @lauren I’m very far left. I’m extremely displeased with Biden on several fronts, but I’m voting for the man despite it being very hard for me to vote in a state where it won’t matter (MO).

The coup plotters and their cheerleaders need to be repudiated. Fuck those fascists.

I despise RFK Jr. His antivax bullshit alone makes him a villain with a huge body count. Now he is repeating Russian propaganda about Ukraine. Maybe he will start shilling crypto and LLMs to just complete the villainy.

Where do you live and how do you feel about it?

Obviously, don't tell me exactly where you live, no actual addresses please! You can be as vague as you like.

I live in Central Missouri in the U.S.

Pros:

This is an absolutely beautiful place, green rolling hills, lots of rivers, lakes, ponds, and natural springs, cool caves to explore.

Lots of farming here, so great access to quality fruits, vegetables, meat, eggs, and dairy.

It's relatively inexpensive to live here compared with other states, because it's a "flyover".

I'm close enough to three major cities, that it's an easy day trip, and I'm about halfway to anywhere in the U.S.

We have one of the best Conservation departments in the U.S. and this is one of the few things that is a bipartisan issue. Lots of awesome nature programs that are free or cheap, state parks, conservation areas, bird watching, hunting, boating, foraging available to everyone.

Cons:

Yeah, it's a big one, it is a RED STATE, while a lot of the cities are blue, there is a large rural population, that votes red. Abortion is not legal here. People often vote against their own self interest.

While I'm not against responsible gun ownership, lots of people aren't responsible, and people have access to guns that definitely should not.

We have very few employee protections here, while the cost of living is relatively low compared with other places, it's taken years to get to a $12 minimum wage, and it's still not enough.

@Sobieck@hachyderm.io avatar

@RickiTarr I feel about the same you do… because we are neighbors (Columbia MO here).

I wish we had politicians that were more ambitious in their program. I don’t just want Roe codified*, I want us to all have bodily autonomy.

Give people the ability to do what they want with their own bodies. This means aid in dying, free healthcare for all, trans rights, legalization of sex work, the destruction of the prison industrial complex, etc.

So we are going use an aircraft carrier to support Israel, one of the most powerful nations on earth, bomb Hamas and civilians in Gaza.

Fuck Hamas, I hope they die, but I don’t think we are going to win the hearts and minds of the people of Gaza if we kill a shitload of their children.

We do this all while we don’t do shit for the SDF against Turkey, the Armenians being genocided by Azerbaijan, or more forcefully helping Ukraine.

I don’t see Israel recovering from this war. They’ve burned all of the good will they had after the 7th. They don’t control the narrative anymore.

I will never forget the interview I listened to of Refaat Alareer on Popular Front. His kids screaming in the background as bombs exploded in the neighborhood. I remember thinking “this man is a dead man” and he just seemed like a decent man trying to live his life. He died soon after.

I think many people have had moments like that.

Airdropping provisions to gaza has to be the dumbest thing I've ever read.

Why? The Israelis are wholly dependent on American support. Tell them that they need to let in supplies and stop their genocide or we pull our support. This isn't hard.

Netanyahu is not your BFF Joe. He is a fascist thug. And he is going to get his fascist buddy Trump elected if you keep on supporting the fucker.

I absolutely do not care, even a little bit, if Trump had sex with and paid off Stormy Daniels*.

I care that he led a coup attempt and stole and tried to sell classified documents.

  • I don't care about it for the reasons that I'm told to care. I care that it appears that the entire thing was coercion on the part of that rat bastard Trump and that he used his power to get sex with a porn star.
Sobieck,
@Sobieck@hachyderm.io avatar

@Adam_Cadmon1

I'm constantly bewildered about how 1/6 has been buried.

It was the most dangerous thing that has happened to our constitutional order since at least the civil war. The fact that the people involved have not been drummed out of society is extremely distressing.

It feels like I'm crazy to think this because of how nonchalant everyone is about it.
