@passthejoe I'm of the opinion that fewer partitions are better. If I could use only swap files and store all of /boot on the EFI system partition, I would, and I would be significantly happier.
Sadly, because FAT doesn't support hard links, dpkg can't properly install package files (vmlinuz, etc) on the ESP, so /boot-on-ESP doesn't really work and I've had to give up on that idea.
We were just having a normal conversation under the warm Adelaide sun when she said, “I hate Chinese people. Hate them.”
I stared at her, wondering if she realised that I am Chinese.
I rarely write about #politics but I feel it’s important to describe the impact of rising #USChinaTensions on a “normie” member of the #Chinese diaspora. It's this: Sheer, utter frustration and exasperation.
Raw Story:
Some Alabama GOP voters are fed up with Tommy Tuberville's military promotion blockade
... CNN reporter Lauren Fox found out, Alabama voters aren't all on board with Tuberville's scheme — not even Republican voters.
"When you start politicizing how to promote, I think we are stepping into the wrong territory," said Greg Black, another Alabama voter. "I come from a military family... https://www.rawstory.com/tommy-tuberville-2662291958/
@itnewsbot If you buy a device and you need the manufacturer's authorization to use it, it isn't yours; you've been conned into paying full purchase price for a rental.

I am not trying to sound brilliant I just want to make a statement.
Over the years that I worked in IT I made some pronouncements that, in hindsight, could be seen as prophetic. I never really intended them to be that. They were just random thoughts in my head.
There was the one around 1970/71 where I said something like, "One day these disk drives will be at remote sites connected by the network." I think that would be called The Cloud.
Hot take: Modern #Unix#CLI tools should not have a one- or two-letter command name. Your tool is not that cool that it’ll be as ubiquitous as ls or cd, and it’ll just create conflicts down the line. Let me create the aliases myself if I really need to save the keystrokes.
This is how social media sites die. Not with big protests, but people and communities quietly moving away.
One of #Reddit’s biggest communities is suggesting users move to #Discord / r/malefashionadvice is private in protest of Reddit, but it is building up a community on Discord and has carried over its guides to Substack.
It’s been a while since I’ve posted some #RetroComputing goodness. Time to fix that!
This is my 2020 13” #Apple MacBook Pro running System 7.1, thanks to Mini vMac. The environment is running at 640x400—the native resolution of the old 100-series PowerBooks. Much to my surprise and delight, this is a 16:10 aspect ratio, and it appears perfectly proportioned on this display.
And this isn’t a toy. I set up a PDF printer, and the PDFs can be passed to the host machine for viewing and printing!
@fell@GNUxeava Whatever the problem is, it isn't throughput. In my observation, both Windows and Linux seem to get around 3MB/sec typical throughput on HDD. Linux, somehow, seems to do a better job of scheduling HDD access.
However, I notice that dpkg is extremely slow on a btrfs RAID1 setup using HDDs. Upgrading to a new distro version takes literally all day. Doing the same on SSDs takes less than an hour. IIRC it's because fsync is really slow in this setup. I wonder if io_uring would help…

I have this slight suspicion that this may be one of those releases that may drag out […] simply due to lot of Europe going on vacation for the month of August. But who knows... We'll see how things develop.

FWIW, the #iwlwifi crash on boot some people experience will hopefully soon be fixed by this patch: [https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=217622#c9](https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=217622#c9)
Hi Beeple! I (Lionir) have shut down the server until further notice. There seems to be a big vulnerability in Lemmy at the moment that is propagating at an alarming rate. I'd rather be safe than sorry. Hope this doesn't last too long.
@Npars01 An atmosphere like that of Venus is not even remotely possible. All of that carbon used to be on the surface, and even then, Earth was nothing like Venus. If it was, life in general would have gone extinct, and we wouldn't be around to discuss the matter.
That said, it is definitely possible for Earth to become quite inhospitable to human life.
Well this is quite annoying. I just realized that tags on Mastodon are case sensitive. I've been intentionally doing pascal case style tags for accessibility and assumed the tag would be treated as the same no matter the case. However, as an example #ThrowbackThursday and #throwbackthursday are treated as two different tags.
Just a reminder from someone who cares a lot about online privacy and security: Mozilla ousted that bigot Brendan Eich, and he now runs Brave. Do what you have to do to tighten up your web browser, Firefox or otherwise. But don't support a bigot. Don't use Brave browser. #WebBrowser#WebBrowsers#Firefox#Mozilla
