A year can go by in a flash. And that’s certainly how I feel as @Flipboard marks the first birthday of our Mastodon editorial desks. We tentatively dipped our toes into the water, not sure what to expect. What we quickly discovered was a smart, engaged community of people truly curious about our world for all its virtues and faults.

We instantly observed far more replies, favorites and boosts than we ever saw on X (Twitter) even though we had many more followers there. By November, we abandoned X to focus on Mastodon and a few other platforms.

When we launched our Mastodon accounts, we had no idea that Flipboard itself would federate, which is a work in progress. In recent months, we’ve federated our editorial curation from the app, greatly expanding your options to follow the topics you’re most interested in, such as news, politics, sports, entertainment, etc. And we’re in the process of federating publisher Flipboard accounts so that you can follow their topical Magazines. Already, you can find accounts such as Smithsonian Magazine, Euronews, Frommers, CBS Sports and SPIN.

Thank you for all of your feedback and support. If you like our work, please boost this post and help us grow our audience.

In France at the moment, not only is their a legal requirement for car parks over a certain size to have solar panels, supermarkets with smaller car parks are now doing it voluntarily as it makes them money

@soviut this is rural France, on the edge of a small town. While there’s some scope for increased public transport most of the customers are outside walking distance and it would never be economical for public transport to cover all their needs.
In towns it still can take decades to implement transit routes where as these panels are going up in a few years and it’s hoped will cover the capacity of around 10 nuclear power stations.

Rights grabs are becoming more common, though. I believe that the only way to stop them is to stop doing business with any company that attempts one. Backing down from a rights grab is too late.

As water becomes scarcer, the investors will move in. As well, AI and data centers will buy water rights.

The poor can die of thirst but data's thirst must always come first.

"We know water is the source of life. But it can also be a source for portfolio diversification. Like gold and oil, water is a commodity—and it happens to be rather scarce nowadays. So, as with any other scarcity, the water shortage creates investment opportunities."

So news this morning is that Sega USA staff has unionized. Great.

Mass layoffs in the IT sector, including gaming, in recent months have sent tech workers a clear message: "The days when you were rockstars are over. You're now as disposable as anyone else"

And it looks like IT workers are starting to respond the only way any workers can: collectively.

It's decades too late, but better late than never.

Canada's constitution recognizes two levels of government under the crown: 1) federal and 2) provincial. These two entities are supposed to conflict over jurisdictional issues as part of the normal fumctioning to define jurisdiction and for incremental change via case law.

Dotard Smith is falsely claiming that lawsuits are exceptional when they're the normal outcome when the two govts can't agree (collegial governance), and the number of lawsuits is just corrupt political games.

Decriminalization doesn't just take time, it requires other funded resources to help change behavior: easily accessible treatment and rehabilitation programs, mental health programs, court diversion programs, programs to address homelessness, and so on.

    Portugal did those things too.

Half thinking of starting an #AcademicVenting hashtag here, about the dire, dire state of UK (global?) higher education. Sharing nuggets of senior management decisions, neoliberal language, and overall slow collapse.

Won’t work of course because most of us can’t risk honesty, but honestly: the everyday reality of what is happening deserves recording in all its depressing and damning detail. #Universities #AcademicChatter #neoliberalism

The story starts with the freezing of tuition fees in 2017, creating a growing hole in university finances that many plugged by recruiting more foreign students (who pay more than British teenagers for the same degree). That kept the show on the road until the resulting immigration numbers became politically toxic, prompting a government clampdown on visas and a sudden 33% fall in foreign student numbers compared with the same time last year.“
