OK listen. Doll.

NO ONE is looking for a dynamic, fast-paced work environment in 2024. We are exhausted. Get in your DeLorean and take that attitude back to 1984.

This is about the xz supply chain attack I boosted earlier. (The oss-security post [EDIT: that's https://www.openwall.com/lists/oss-security/2024/03/29/4] is clear, informative and horrifying; you should read it. The entire open source ecosystem is funded on trusting that something like this would never happen.)

EDIT: Correction. Homebrew believes they're immune https://github.com/orgs/Homebrew/discussions/5243#discussioncomment-8954951 But recommends removing the "untrustworthy" version anyway to be safe.

There's a lot that's alarming in this article, but perhaps the most alarming part is the NYC spokesperson assering that the problem can be fixed via upgrades:

emilymbender, (edited )
@emilymbender@dair-community.social avatar

It seems to bear repeating: chatbots based on large language models are designed to make shit up. This isn't a fixable bug. It's a fundamental mismatch between tech and task.

Also, it's worth noting that RAG (retrieval augmented generation) doesn't fix the problem. See those nice links into NYC web pages? Not stopping the system from making shit up. (Second column is chatbot response, third is journalist's report on the actual facts.)

$660M crypto money to “save humanity from the existential risk of AI.” Same people wrote a few years ago how “without AI we are doomed.” Selling utopia and apocalypse for billions. No one knows how to circle money amongst themselves like these people.

Between 1998 - 2020, the Department of Justice didn’t file a single monopolization claim against anyone.

Since then, enforcers have filed major antitrust suits against Facebook, Amazon, Google, and now Apple.

Antitrust is back in a very big way — and that's a good thing.

Hey friends!

The Fedi moderation community is watching a cluster of inauthentic accounts popping up across numerous servers. These are posting bland, platitude-laden or word salad posts, unattributed images, or generated content along with a certain few hashtags to get attention.

These will not be able to register here unless invited, but please report them if you see them. Other moderators need to know.

The best way to preserve the fediverse is to provide support to it.

Pay your instance admin if you can, if you can't boost their fundraiser posts

Pay the developers who develop the software you use on there if you can. If you can't, boost their posts and help them fundraise.

Also pay the projects non Dev folks. Because they help Devs to focus on the code while they do community development, moderation etc.

It's an ecosystem and we can't rely on the whims of VCs.

A year can go by in a flash. And that’s certainly how I feel as @Flipboard marks the first birthday of our Mastodon editorial desks. We tentatively dipped our toes into the water, not sure what to expect. What we quickly discovered was a smart, engaged community of people truly curious about our world for all its virtues and faults.

We instantly observed far more replies, favorites and boosts than we ever saw on X (Twitter) even though we had many more followers there. By November, we abandoned X to focus on Mastodon and a few other platforms.

When we launched our Mastodon accounts, we had no idea that Flipboard itself would federate, which is a work in progress. In recent months, we’ve federated our editorial curation from the app, greatly expanding your options to follow the topics you’re most interested in, such as news, politics, sports, entertainment, etc. And we’re in the process of federating publisher Flipboard accounts so that you can follow their topical Magazines. Already, you can find accounts such as Smithsonian Magazine, Euronews, Frommers, CBS Sports and SPIN.

Thank you for all of your feedback and support. If you like our work, please boost this post and help us grow our audience.

Positive news:

Pollution will be curbed under a rule from the EPA -esp. beneficial to poor, Black & Latino communities. It'll require manufacturers to slash emissions of GHG from new trucks, delivery vans & buses. The rule will not mandate the adoption of a particular 0-emission tech, rather -will require manufacturers to reduce emissions by choosing from several cleaner technologies: electric trucks, hybrid trucks & hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles-.

Just fyi, in Illinois, many of the teachers teaching dual credit courses for college courses are not remotely qualified to do so, their syllabi and content do match what the state says they’re supposed to have, and even though department chairs like myself are supposed to have approval rights to make sure the classes aren’t a joke, we can deny all we want and get overrruled anyway. So the students may be getting college credits, but they’re not getting college content. And nobody seems to care.

DrPsyBuffy,

I was asked to approve a high school teachers syllabi for Intro to Psych that skipped over the chapter on mental illness and has the students watching a self-selected movie on mental illness instead. Because movies are so accurate. I denied it but they overruled me. Because nothing matters anymore
