I sincerely hope the vast majority of “GenAI enhancements” will go the way of the 3D glasses which the movie theaters unsuccessfully tried to foist onto our noggins as the upsell no one had asked for.

Remember those things? They were kind-of-okay for Avatar, and then nothing else ever again. Today there can be no doubt that the novelty was ultimately not worth its weight in plastic pollution.

Took nearly a decade for corporations to largely give up on that forced fad, so, hang in there! 💪

Social bookmarking is a novel use case for and I’m super excited about it. I heckin’ love links and lists! I wanna use them for everything.

Things like are cool, but it’s not what I want. I just wanna link the thing. Books, films, podcasts, articles, songs.., they’re all just resource recommendations which can be encapsulated by links.

Thanks to @raffomania and @eb for the indirect prompts leading to this article mixing their ideas with my own.

To free ourselves from feudal identity fiefdoms, we must simultaneously de-centralize and re-centralize identity.

Decentralize ownership.
Recentralize agency.

By de-centralizing the ownership of identity away from platform monopolies and back to individuals, we can re-centralize the agency of personhood.

The central authority of ones digital identity must be the individual. That's how we regain our digital sovereignty.

In the glory days of web 1.0, social websites would prominently link out to their digital neighbors via lists known as webrings; magical doorways to an expansive hinterland of digital villages.

Let's envision what a truly federated chat like could do to improve the cross-connectivity of chat channels. Most of these features are already possible, they just haven't been implemented yet in a community-oriented client experience.

I suspect the fedi-collective has more negotiating power in this moment than it realizes. We may as well make some asks, see how Meta responds, and they in turn will see how the public, the media and the regulators respond to them in this bold new era of pervasive Big Tech skepticism.

Money can mitigate the risk of :

'overburdening moderators': $200k for moderation.

Is there any TLD registry (not registrar) and accompanying domain name extension (.com, .net and so on) out there that’s owned by a small/independent, i.e. trustworthy business? Feels like they’re all owned by some creepy mega-corp.

.blog owned by Automattic is a decent example, though they’re not exactly very indie anymore, and have come under strong scrutiny of late. I wonder if there are even better alternatives.

UPDATE: .tel is a pretty interesting one.

It's bad enough that GenAI mashes together thousands of similar drawings and repaints them at your behest with the signatures of its contributors scrubbed out, their record of work erased. Don't add insult to injury by omitting any credit of the machine assistance whatsoever, as if this work was painted by your hand.

Whenever I see an uncredited image online, I assume foul play. Every uncredited image is non-consensual exploitation of art.

@opencollective any chance OpenCollective might start offering a lightweight equivalent of Stripe Atlas? Aimed strictly at commons-aligned, public benefit corporations and the like.

I find myself wanting a super simple way to get small OSS startups and coops off the ground with a paid product.

I collaborate with some people who are unbanked. I really want to them to have all initial profits of whichever product we sell together, but without a bank that’s not an option.

The authors [of the paper "Coopting Disruption: Has Big Tech disrupted disruption itself?”] propose a four-step program for the would-be Tech Baron hoping to defend their turf from disruption.

1️⃣ First, gather information about startups that might develop disruptive technologies and steer them away from competing with you, by investing in them or partnering with them.

The CC org could spark a lot of generative dialog by simply drafting such a license in the open, long before calling it Done.

I don’t know how to put this in generalized legal language, but I know what I oppose.

Kudos to for their competitive compatibility hijinks as of late.

No doubt they’re intentionally building a case for regulators. They’ve forced Apple’s hand, effectively showing that cross-platform comms is a matter of willingness, not technical limitation.

Seeing as Apple’s company policy is provably anti-competitive, we the users rely on state-mandated policies to overrule them in favor of adversarial interop.

@photomatt & co have talked about making Tumblr fully open source for a long time. In light of Tumblr’s downsizing, this is the time to do so!

Since it’s failing to make a profit they may as well release it for the wider internet community to go nuts with it.

Better yet, spin Tumblr out as a standalone co-op venture to succeed or fail on its own merits.

There’s a major convergence of OAuth/OIDC support across applications, is going all-in on it as its root default, and other social web protocols are tagging along as well.

Like the separation of church and state, it seems prudent to keep the management of our digital identities separate from our social network servers.

Domain-based OIDC accounts with web sign-in, especially when self-hosted, serve the function of a minimum-viable

https://socialhub.activitypub.rocks/t/how-solid-and-activitypub-complement-each-other-best/727/14?u=erlend_sh

I want my root digital identity and follow-contacts stored in a Solid pod, letting me log into all fediverse platforms via Solid-OIDC.

Marketplaces do not self-correct. Ecosystems do.

A marketplace is not an ecosystem. It is merely a single organism, a megafauna, whose sole purpose is to consume and grow as much as possible.

An ecosystem on the other hand has no inherent growth-imperative. The primary objective of an ecosystem is equilibrium; circular exchange of energy. A secondary objective is emergent diversity for the sake of adaptability & robustness.

Make ecosystems, not marketplaces 🌱
