Small thing but hey if you hear someone working through simple math out loud, please don't tease them about it unless you truly know it's welcome.

Dyscalculia is like dyslexia with numbers, people who struggle with it frequently make simple math errors. These are often reduced if we say the numbers out loud. Cracks about whether someone can calculate a tip or do other everyday math in their head...it can feel very not funny, and increase anxiety (making the calculating harder).

This meme went by and I sent the image to my friend who is also a professor of Old English/Medieval Studies, and she texts back, "PLOT TWIST! These are actually Normans!"

And then..."I'm not actually sure that all of those figures are Normans. I'd have to take another look at the Bayeaux Tapestry..."

Seriously, I love it when people nerd out. 😂 Just so much. SO MUCH.

Me: I will try to resist sending you more...

Her: No need to resist. Academics love correcting inaccuracies :D

It really bugs me in these natural disaster or zombie/alien movies when no one has a decent backpack. Everyone’s running around with these useless purses or crappy little rucksacks that will give you blisters the second you load it up. Come on, people! If you can loot a grocery store you can loot an REI. The concept is the same. Get a freaking compass while you’re at it. Maybe a bike. You can outrun a lot of zombies on a bike. I assume. Grab a hat, too. The last thing you need now is a sunburn.

If anyone cares to record my vote on why teenagers are experiencing more mental illness, it's the world, not the screens.

We need more nature, fewer screens, I deeply believe that. But I've been saying this for years: kids SEE everything. They know the world they're inheriting. They aren't oblivious. Even little ones feel it. Culturally we routinely ignore this. They need the same safety and security we all do, and they aren't getting it (neither are adults, and we're having the same problems).

For ages our trans kid, when asked their gender, replies w/ a grin, “I strive to confuse people.” Top surgery has definitely fulfilled this dream. Today the dentist was using they/them but then “Sir,” and Jupes was thrilled. They said to me later, “I don’t get boy gender feelings, I get gremlin gender euphoric feelings. I’m not glad she called me a boy, I’m glad she slipped up. It makes me want to rub my hands together like a little villain. Like HA HA! You have fallen for my tricks!” 😂

I just made Greg take a picture of this newly-arrived t-shirt I ordered, which is definitely my new favorite shirt. I laughed when I put it on, laughed again with Greg when he read it, then read it in the photo and laughed again. 😂

I walked past my window just now, saw a star, and noted it was twinkling. Cool! Then I stopped….hold on, it’s REALLY TWINKLING. I stared at it and swore I could see it flashing colors. Suspicious, I went to find my binoculars, thinking this must be a drone someone has parked up high. Nope, it IS a star! It’s Sirius! And apparently it does this! Refraction can split starlight into the colors of the rainbow, and Sirius is so bright that it appears to flash a rainbow. WOW! It’s beautiful! 🌈

Found my way into a great discussion on implementing the ability to create private groups, and it startled me how emphatically a few folks were puzzled why this would be desired. One person repeatedly characterized private groups as "hiding from the public square". It feels like issues of harassment (sexism, racism, homophobia, transphobia, etc.) are talked about with such urgency (at least in my circles?) - I can't be the only hearing that? The public sphere isn't safe for everyone.

Today’s journal page is the bike ride to the post office. I parked the bike, sent the postcards down the chute, then took a quick photo as a reference, and painted this at my desk while I listen to A Psalm for the Wild-Built (goodbye everyone, I’m leaving to become a tea monk….).

Alt text question!

Should alt text be a complete sentence, like a period at the end? Like exactly the way you'd normally write it on a page? I notice some folks make it very short, no period at end. Wondering if I'm doing it right.

Also a lot of times I have quote marks in alt text and it breaks the photo on the blog page (though it doesn't break anything Mastodon), so I'm working on avoiding that.

ThriftBooks.com is a great website! I know I've said this before but I want to say it again. I've made many orders, and only today did I get a book that had a few pages missing.

It's late Tuesday night and I wrote them to ask what to do, and they wrote back within an hour and said no worries, they'll send me a new one, free of charge, I don't have to return the old one. Such nice folks!

I am grumpy today because my body is a pile of problems, but regarding the Amazon Prime Video thing, maybe don't put down people who were surprised to see ads. "I myself was wise enough to know how awful Amazon was, unlike you," is not a winning look. We're all in this together.

Also the ads are showing on movies and TV shows people purchased. This legitimately sucks, I don't care how you spin it.

Anyone know if there's a way to tell Amazon that you aren't interested in a genre/author/specific book? I bought something today and it showed me a sidebar that said, "From people you follow," and three of them were correct - a trauma author, cookbook author, and an art instruction author. The fourth was a horrible person writing horrible anti-queer-kid garbage. I did not follow this jerk. Have never perused this genre. WTF? I can't find a way to say, "Never show me this again." Is there a way?

My fellow ADHD folks, my friend just sent me this and it's pretty cool!

Try putting in "clean the kitchen" and then click the wand for "break down item". Then when you see "wash dishes," click the wand again.

Nifty keen jellybean!

I love Fastmail (@fastmail). The Spam filtering seems to get smarter and smarter every year. Its latest feat is catching almost all of the "please review this thing you bought" notifications.

Oh and the person who suggested making a rule to catch anything with "unsubscribe" in the text and put it in a folder: GENIUS. I thought I had my email prefs dialed in but that took it to a whole new level of peace.

Greg shared this with me and I love it, it's helpful! We had one long beach convo about my feeling so vulnerable to messages of doom (Greg is much less so). Mastodon used to help, but after the big migration a year and a half ago, it's doom 24/7 here, too. I'm trying to just check less and mute folks who don't CW doom, and it's helping, but I need to actively cultivate a sense of hope in myself about the world.
