Hey users: I’ve got a recurring issue on my laptop recently where I try to log into my banking website, use the 2FA with my phone, but when I verify access with my phone, it still doesn’t let me into the website.

If I hit I Didn’t Receive A Notification on the website to prompt a second attempt at getting in, it gives me a “technical error” notification and says to try again later.

I cleared cache & cookies and it still happens.

I contacted their help desk and the guy suggested

Windows smartypants peeps:

Is there a shortcut to rebooting that will still free up as much CPU power and RAM as shutting down and restarting?

I'm running a lot of stuff on my aging laptop lately (with a scant 4 megs of RAM, the most it can carry), and it understandably seizes up and misbehaves after a while of that. But I don't want to do a full shutdown and reboot just to clear things up.

Or is that the best/most efficient way to accomplish this and get things running smoothly again?

Can anyone who uses @StartpageSearch on their phones offer any insight here?

  1. I did a search for shoe stores in a specific mall in Toronto, and the initial results came up with shoe stores well across town. I scrolled down a bit to see if any relevant hits showed up, and they were below the initial, wrong info.
    Why?
There was an option to allow access to my location for more specific results, but I'm perhaps misguided in thinking that...

Hey, cyclists:

Any suggestions for where to hide an Air Tag on a bike? I’ve seen a few videos, and there are some good ideas there, like specialty bells and reflectors and cap tops on the handlebar connections. But my thinking is, if videos are being made about those locations, then bike thieves will also be learning where to check for them.

Feel free to DM me if you have any sneaky suggestions.

Seems the test posts I made with Mona worked, but when I tried to log in with it later (already unexpected: I need to log in every time to use it?), it isn’t letting me in.
No error message, it just isn’t letting me past the 2FA screen.

And now that I’m using Ice Cubes to even get back on here, I can’t see those Mona posts in my own profile. Yet they’re there in my Notifications from when one was Liked by another person

I definitely have no idea what’s going on. 🤷‍♂️

Hey, writers —

Something I encounter occasionally in a story and have yet to come up with an elegant way of describing: What would you call what this woman is doing, with her hand and head in particular?

“She rested her head on her open hand, arm raised, elbow propped on the table” is agonizingly verbose for such a common, casual thing. But cutting it down opens it up to ambiguity.

Is that action called something specific?
Suggestions for re-phrasing?

Boosts appreciated.

Does anyone who records vocal audio have any thoughts on why my waveform amplitude seems so small on the recording software?

I’m having to turn the interface gain to almost max just to capture even that.

The presets I’m using in Audacity are in line with tutorials I’ve seen, so it’s not that.

And I know it’s not which USB port the interface is connected to on my laptop. But aside from that, maybe the mic itself (a Shure SM-58)? Maybe the cabling or a connection somewhere?

My new favourite thing is the ridiculousness that is men's underwear commercials. I'm looking at ordering some new skivvies online, and man, the unintended hilarity is top notch.

  • I'll wake up in the morning and grab a new pair of boxers from the stack of them atop my night stand (where everyone keeps their underwear).

  • Once in only those, I'll barely perch, leaning awkwardly back, at the top corner of my bed, flipping through a magazine. As one does.

A not pressing question for Linux types:

If I’m having new (and seemingly increasing) problems with getting and keeping a connection to my home wifi from my aging Windows laptop — this has been a growing problem since upgrading my storage to SSD and switching to Windows 10… Best Buy experts looked at it and confirmed nothing seems to be physically wrong with the adapter — would switching to Linux with the same hardware resolve that issue?

Hey, digital security types:

I use Authy for some secure logging in. Yesterday, twice on two separate occasions when I wasn't online (let alone using Authy), I got text notifications from Authy with a two-step verifcation code.

That's something, to my knowledge, that only happens when I'm trying to log on to certain websites.

Would that have been someone (or a system/whatever) trying to access my account info? Or would that just be a glitch generating those codes out of the blue?

MAC PEOPLE, HEAR ME NOW.

I have an old iMac from a friend that had a dead harddrive that I was able to replace pretty cheaply and has worked fine ever since, though it's topped out at an old OS.

I got another iMac from a neighbour suspecting it may be a harddrive issue as well, which could be an easy fix.

BUT, with both of these stopping at much older OS's that don't get updates any longer and won't run more modern programs, the question came up today...

One of my jobs is working at the LCBO, the province-owned chain of booze stores.

Since the stores started decades ago, they’ve had a few sizes of thin paper bags to load purchases into, kind of a default process.

We recently got word that we’re ending supply of paper bags. They just won’t be offered any more. Province-wide announcements made, and we’re reminding everyone who asks for a paper bag these days to help ease the transition, since we’ll be out of bags likely inside a few weeks.

I THINK I know where this chunk of Triptych by Karin Slaughter is going with this seeming huge detour from the main storyline.
Hoping I’m wrong, because if I’m right, it’s way not my thing.

Honestly struggling to make myself get through this latest story. Got the main concept, got the tentpole scenes, but as is often the case for me, too little to string them together without feeling like I'm stretching out stringing them together.

So now I'm working toward the finale of what feels like it should be a longer story but that's almost entirely unsatisfying thus far and to work on.

I’m at a bit of a crossroads with The Golem and the Jinni.

On the one hand, I’m enjoying it.

On the other hand, it does slow at times and takes a bit of getting through to a point where it pulls me in again.

Those lulls are short, but sometimes the active interest is short as well.

I want to know what’s going to happen but I’m still only edging toward half way through it after weeks of reading it because of my slow reading speed.

Think I’ve asked this before but can’t find the post if so:

Hey, mobile types: What editing apps do you use on your phones to touch up photos?

I was using Photoshop Express and Fotor this morning and found both would only let you modify an image a certain number of times before the paywall popped up.

Free is best, but I’m happy to pay a nominal fee (not subscribe) for a robust enough app.

We had a lot — A… LOT — of kids zigzagging across our street tonight, rather than going up one side and down the other.

A coupe of times they did it in front of cars that were coming. More times than that they didn’t even bother looking either way, just walked out to the other side.

Parents, relatives, friends of anyone with kids: PLEASE explain to them basic safety like not doing this, ever.
The more it happens, the more kids will get hurt. And some will get killed.

I’m delighted to inform you that now that there’s finally enough room on the credit card, AND enough collected in some physical paycheques I still get from gig work, to finally get a new laptop… we’re soon visiting friends in the U.S. for a week and we just found out my wife and daughter aren’t getting all iOS updates any more so they should really get newer phones ASAP.

Working theory that the universe wants me to not have a remotely current or efficient or reliably operating laptop.

To whoever thinks that people lean more to the political right as they get older: Im over 50 and bust my butt at work for $3/hr over minimum wage, where even if I worked full time hours (not often scheduled), I couldn’t afford the average rent for a one-bedroom apartment in my city, let alone eating or paying any other bills.

If anything, I’m seeing the downside of capitalism better as I age and thinking that our union isn’t doing enough.
