Quite by accident, I wrote the outline for a new #fantasy#ttrpg in which you always hit unless your enemy has a reaction that counters it. In other words, you never roll to hit, only for damage.
@AdamMakesTTRPG Kind of like Blades in the Dark but the other way. NPCs never roll anything, players choose to roll to resist consequences (which includes getting stabbied by an NPC who didn't roll "to hit").
I'm a fantasy writing, queer Aussie, earning a living with my second passion: teaching.
I'm currently writing about a bookish, enby heir striving to prove their worth in their perfect father's shadow, with the help of four lost Aussies, and the hinderance of war, betrayal, treason, politics, action & adventure.
I’ve #read the #anthology Adventures in Bodily Autonomy, edited by Raven Belasco. This collection of short stories “exploring reproductive rights in fantasy, science fiction & horror” supports NARAL, which has since been renamed Reproductive Freedom For All. My favorites were Pod Rendezvous by K Ibura and Bullet Point by Elizabeth Bear. #fantasy#sciencefiction#books#reading@bookstodon
Had a dream I was running a 1980s set fantasy game that was basically the A-Team but with fantasy ancestries and magic.
I remember a little about the world. Sometime during the 50s an island appeared off the coast of California. It brought fantasy ancestries and a return of magic. By the 60s the people from the island were us citizens and had started living among humans. #rambling#fantasy
Don't know why it took me so long to realize it, but George's Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire (aka Game of Thrones) is a great example of "Soft Magic".
The magic is not really explained, so much as some of it is placed into context. It retains it's mystery despite repeated use, like the flaming swords, or the 3-eyed raven. Nobody tells you how it works.
I just discovered a wonderful thing! Amazon does not consider my online bookstore competition, and will not penalize me for lowering my prices there. 😀🥳
So, I can now offer my ebooks for a dollar less through the "Buy Direct" option on my website and still make more per sale than from the major vendors.
If you enjoy #fantasy but hate Amazon, consider buying direct from indie authors (like me! 😀)
It means so much that my speculative poem "Sonnet for Birds" was accepted, and is now published in Strange Horizons. I'm in wonderful company for this Caribbean SFF Special Issue.
1/9 🧵 En cette période de rentrée scolaire, je vous propose moi aussi de retourner à l’école… de magie. Voici quelques livres de #fantasy à découvrir sur ce thème (non, il n’y a pas que Poudlard !) :
Too many #fantasy settings don't put enough thought into the infrastructure of mining. If you have some really big mines - which are popular with fantasy settings for good reasons! - then you need something to power the pulleys, lifts, and (most importantly) the pumps if the mines are in a region with significant amounts of groundwater. Because these mines will be wet by default.
Of course, you could go Steampunk or even Magitech, and use steam power or magical enchantments to power all this infrastructure. But a real world alternative which has been used in the Harz Mountains for centuries is - water power! Yes, that's right, you use water to pump more water out of the mines!
But the thing is, this is going to leave massive marks on the landscape. The Upper Harz has a vast system of ditches and reservoirs created over the centuries which ensured that there was always enough water available to power the mines, and the water always went where it needed to go (and parts of it are still used for electricity generation to this day).
So... if there are some dwarven, goblin, kobold or whatever mines in some nearby mountains, the first clue towards their existence might be some artificial barrier lakes and ditches that channel the flow of water to the mines - and some outflows from the mines as well, carrying the (no doubt toxic) waste with them.
What will be the effect on the human or elven communities downriver? Well, they might not be happy about it - though perhaps the ability to trade with the mines is more important for the local rulers. And such conflicting interests are, of course, great story material...
And once you have mines that are as deep as those of the Harz Mountains - which went hundreds of meters beneath the ground - you need some kind of mechanism, since human(oid) labor simply can't do it by hand any more.
@juergen_hubert The Harz is an amazing source of inspiration for mines! There's a massive network of channels under the mountains for transporting ores and they had a very unique type of ladder elevator when safe wire rope wasn't really a thing yet.
I kinda remember a #fantasy short story (or maybe novella) I read several years ago, about a kid (?) who could somehow portal across worlds, which had "Stratagem" in the title and was the first published work of a young author.
I know it's very little to go on but maybe somebody here can help me?
Must have been on #beneathceaselessskies, #clarkesworld, #locus or #FSF since those are the magazines I've variously subscribed to.

Once upon a time a mouse spirit and a mighty dragon king fell in love. It's quite a story as to how that came to pass. But this is not that story. This is the story of the first child of their union and of their very first adventure, before their siblings came into the world.
