So after days of trying to find a trustworthy instance I come to the conclusion that it's utterly unusable for the moment. Hardly any good discoverability, no proper app, no trustworthy instances to go to to upload videos that ain't educational, still lingering p2p security issues… this includes the recently finished v6.

I just don't understand why it's designed like this and I'm honestly annoyed that I'm now forced to either make myself a new or account. :(

OpenSociocracy.org will provide Matrix accounts as well. This will allow end-to-end encryption for groups that need or want it.

Imagine how much worse it would be if different phone companies refused to call eachother, and built their systems so that it was impossible. Imagine it not just as a user, but as a society. That's non-federated social media.

Decentralized FOSS alternatives to the major corporate services are in a bind. To get lots of users and have an impact, they need to prove to the masses that they can do just what the popular platforms do, but better. To reach their full potential of improving the internet and thus society, they need to change it up and take full advantage of the innovation that decentralization allows. Quite a conundrum.

I think the long term solution is to move to completely rewritten Misskey v13 cos FF & Iceshrimp don't have the folks with the necessary DBA skills needed to unfuck the db issues with their forks. But major kudos to the Iceshrimp team for trying to work things out, helping admins out with performance stuff, etc. FF devs demonstrating they're not following that blahaj zone and others have been having scaling issues while on expensive, fast servers, that they have NFI what is happening in the backend, or they're MIA.

I am considering start a Mobilizon instance, however I sadly discovered that Framasoft doesn't seem to put it in their future product roadmap. Not sure if we will have a sustainable community around it yet. Does anyone know a federated alternative for it that is actively maintained?

If everyone was already here, most complaints people have now wouldn't exist cause they're primarily symptoms of still being quite small. The issues that still did exist wouldn't loom so large cause the experience of following everyone would more than make up for them. And those who now claim the is too complicated, would instead mock platforms for 1) ads 2) data mining 3) shitty moderation 4) letting owners decide what their users actually see

Our only real problem is their lock-in.
