Been eyeballing these #mushroom logs up at Snow Goose farms for, probably, over a year.
Today, on our weekend day trippin', we swung by to pick up some greens & stuff. In a moment of vulnerability, my partner opened the door, I gave in, and finally picked up a Blue Oyster log.
Here's to hoping I can stuff this into a dark, damp place & make #food happen.🤞
Day 9 (20240604) pic of Blue Oyster #mushroom log:
Another uneventful night for growth. Last night, I made an impulsive, excutive decision and made some shallow scores with a knife on right side of the log in the hopes that it would faciliate some growth there. So far, that hasn't borne any fruit yet. We shall see.
One time I ate something so spicy at midnight, I proceeded to do an Asian squat in the middle of the street for ten minutes without saying anything. I was frozen (I think it was five chillies in my ‘bread omelette’)
@gannet yup I can see that! I continue to default to just squatting all around the house, even here. I find it more comfy than, say, leaning back on a couch and my back hurts less

There’s a part of my soul that deeply needs Chinese bakery bread. My fave in the city is Yummy Bakery, my fave in east bay is Napoleon Super in Oakland Chinatown
@elizach
Looks great, but I can't help but to imagine how all the fillings would slide off/it being too tall to eat comfortably. (Yeah yeah I know probably eating these with knife and a fork).
@susie Actually, we ate it with our hands and didn't get messy at all. It's not as tall as it looks, the lettuce at the bottom and the onion ring add some height, but a little squeeze does the trick. The key is in how you hold it: three fingers on top, thumbs holding up the front of the bun, and pinkies holding the bottom!
🍔🍟 What's the best thing to consume about this documentary film directed by the died Morgan Spurlock (R.I.P.)?
🎬 While examining the influence of the fast food industry, Morgan Spurlock personally explores the consequences on his health of a diet of solely McDonald's food for one month.
Old enough to remember how #Biden’s #food drops in #Gaza literally crushed some starving people to death. Old enough to remember how aid workers with the #US-handpicked World Central Kitchen were bombed to death likely by US weapons. Young enough to witness the latest failure of phoney US philanthropy.
Removes some of the "sliminess", if you are not a fan of it (I like it, myself).
I will likely continue to quick cook mine, EXCEPT when I have older, tougher nopal I want to cook, where the boiling breaks down the toughness.
Tip: Scramble the eggs separately, adding the eggs to this, the eggs bind to the liquids and makes cactus-tomato-egg-drop-soup, LOL. Which is fine, but not what I was aiming for. #cactus#gardening#food
@ai6yr My Mom keeps trying to get me to love nopales, and I've had them like twice where they were bomb, getting rid of the gooey for sure is part of what did that. Mexican friends eat it way more often and I wish it was more part of the staple diet here from being known. We stay out here watering water intensive crops, like almonds, in a desert. This here makes sense.
@msquebanh that looks nice. I'm musing over your description of baked chicken. I'd say roast chicken, but the chicken gets roasted in the same oven where I would bake a cake. Now I'm wondering why we have two words for cooking in the same way. #BakedChicken#RoastCake
Its difficult to assess what % of food (or food based energy) consumed is ultra processed, but here is a chart that aggregates a number of studies to suggest the range of % for a selection of countries.... & then when you know Big Food in the USA spends more on lobbying than the Tobacco industry (which is likely to be similar in UK)... it starts to make sense.
Link that to public health & we have some more context for the UK's health crisis.
@peterbrown@ChrisMayLA6@sunflowerinrain I was reading At Home: A Short History of Private Life by Bryson. He brings together food adulteration practices in a rather horrible if compelling read in one section.
Today's #homecooked lunch was steamed #okra & fried garlic salt n pepper #prawns. I dipped okra in fermented bean curd sauce(not pictured). Ate both of these dishes with small bowl of steamed jasmine rice(not pictured).
@mu@msquebanh
Never tried boiled or steamed okra. Grandma was southern and always fried it with cornmeal breading. Not really fond of the large seeds but otherwise I liked it.
@LibrarianRA This is right up there with the banana ham loaf I saw in "Parade" magazine once, where whole bananas were surrounded by ground ham, so each slice of the loaf looked like two white eyes staring at you. Wish I could find a picture.
