Jokes aside, it was bad before but now I have completely given up on buying ebooks or go through Kindle Unlimited as a result. Instead, I do it the slow way, via Goodreads or social media recommendations. That's the only way I know to cut through the noise, and I feel bad for the #WritingCommunity because they have to battle through this trash to be found 😔
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Remember that AI like ChatGPT is meant to EVOKE the essence of the right answer, not DEPICT the actual right answer. Yes there are definitely areas of concern. But making ChatGPT “respond inaccurately” is not Skynet coming to wipe you out.
The weird side conversations you end up having at a baby shower with normals…
The big news in search this week is that Google is continuing its transition to "AI search" - instead of typing in search terms and getting links to websites, you'll ask Google a question and an AI will compose an answer based on things it finds on the web:
If you'd like an essay-formatted version of this thread to read or share, here's a link to it on pluralistic.net, my surveillance-free, ad-free, tracker-free blog:
The Dungeons & Dragons role-playing game franchise says it won’t allow artists to use artificial intelligence technology to draw its cast of sorcerers, druids and other characters and scenery.
#enshittification, anyone? Perfect example from publishing. A publisher is using AI to write crappy nonfiction, then assigning author names that almost match leading experts in that field (to trick search engines). No doubt other AIs will now search those texts as authoritative. This is done solely to make money and only makes the world a worse place. #books#reading#ai#bookstodon@bookstodon@pluralistic
For example if someone creates something new that is horrible for humans, how will AI understand that it is bad if it doesn't have other horrible things to relate it with?
Tech companies currently do their own "red-teaming" of products – subjecting them to tests to find potential problems, like #disinformation or #racism. But #Biden's executive order will require the government to set new standards, tools and tests for #RedTeaming – and will require companies to notify the government and share the red-teaming results for #AI products. #AIOversight
In the chaos around #NLP, I went back and re-read the beautiful article by Lawrence Barsalou on the function of language in human cognition.
Barsalou argues that language evolved in humans to support coordinated action. Archival function of language is secondary. He highlights that #CognitiveScience#Linguistics has largely studied the secondary function and made minimal advances on the primary.

LexisNexis, one of the biggest data brokers on the planet, is incorporating ChatGPT-style Generative AI into their legal search engine. I read the report (linked in comments). There is a black-hole-sized void in it.
The entire report does not include a single mention of "hallucinations" or "confabulations". How can you introduce GenAI in the legal sector without ever addressing the Achilles' heel of LLMs?
Sometimes, I tell a little story, early in the morning, before I do other things. I was building images to match. #Thread
HOW FAR BACK, CAN YOU REMEMBER, AS A CHILD?
I was 3 in this story, #Petawawa Ontario, and as a background for those who don't know me, I was #ADHD then, also. It's important to wear down my excess energy, I used to run 10 miles before work, to spare my co-workers. My father used to walk me around.
AI put a little boy (me) ON tracks!
Do I really need to write another Gilbert & Sullivan "Modern Major General" parody, this time about #AI? Last time I parodied that song was about #Google long ago.
I keep hearing that “#AI will solve the #climate crisis.”
We don’t need new algorithms & generative AI for that.
We already know exactly what we need to do to address* climate change.
Our future will be determined by whether or not we choose to act. I’m hopeful we will.
*Note: “Address” as in achieve better outcomes. Not “solve.” Climate change is here. We cannot avoid it, but we can achieve a more sustainable & equitable Earth.
