Totally didn't see this coming!

Jokes aside, it was bad before but now I have completely given up on buying ebooks or go through Kindle Unlimited as a result. Instead, I do it the slow way, via Goodreads or social media recommendations. That's the only way I know to cut through the noise, and I feel bad for the because they have to battle through this trash to be found 😔

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Remember that AI like ChatGPT is meant to EVOKE the essence of the right answer, not DEPICT the actual right answer. Yes there are definitely areas of concern. But making ChatGPT “respond inaccurately” is not Skynet coming to wipe you out.

The big news in search this week is that Google is continuing its transition to "AI search" - instead of typing in search terms and getting links to websites, you'll ask Google a question and an AI will compose an answer based on things it finds on the web:

LLMs and GPT-based AI systems should pay IP fees to all creators and authors whose work provides the AI ability.

What's that you say? They wouldn't be financially viable? Then these AI systems are basically stealing. 💰

#enshittification, anyone? Perfect example from publishing. A publisher is using AI to write crappy nonfiction, then assigning author names that almost match leading experts in that field (to trick search engines). No doubt other AIs will now search those texts as authoritative. This is done solely to make money and only makes the world a worse place.

I found a bot which was hammering my site. So I asked the author if they could make it opt-in.

Apparently consent doesn't matter if it's for the greater good.

In the chaos around , I went back and re-read the beautiful article by Lawrence Barsalou on the function of language in human cognition.

Barsalou argues that language evolved in humans to support coordinated action. Archival function of language is secondary. He highlights that has largely studied the secondary function and made minimal advances on the primary.

Perhaps I can now, finally, know peace.

What they're calling is inevitable because it's just computers, computing, and computers already exist and are everywhere.

We cannot stop it, unless you have a plan to stop all computing, forever. Meanwhile, AI products are becoming more useful to people all the time.

So, when it comes to critique of AI, we have to up our game if we want a future worth living in.

LexisNexis, one of the biggest data brokers on the planet, is incorporating ChatGPT-style Generative AI into their legal search engine. I read the report (linked in comments). There is a black-hole-sized void in it.

The entire report does not include a single mention of "hallucinations" or "confabulations". How can you introduce GenAI in the legal sector without ever addressing the Achilles' heel of LLMs?

HOW FAR BACK, CAN YOU REMEMBER, AS A CHILD?
I was 3 in this story, #Petawawa Ontario, and as a background for those who don't know me, I was #ADHD then, also. It's important to wear down my excess energy, I used to run 10 miles before work, to spare my co-workers. My father used to walk me around.

I keep hearing that “ will solve the crisis.”

We don’t need new algorithms & generative AI for that.

We already know exactly what we need to do to address* climate change.

Our future will be determined by whether or not we choose to act. I’m hopeful we will.

*Note: “Address” as in achieve better outcomes. Not “solve.” Climate change is here. We cannot avoid it, but we can achieve a more sustainable & equitable Earth.

Hmm...

I asked DALLE-3 to create "Batik Cats of the Rainbow" and this was the result?

Oooof!

I then repeatedly asked for more photographic and real results -- but the Bot refused to comply!

Oh, well, Happy Caturday anyway!
