For #ThrowbackThursday I have this photo I made with a Kodak Instamatic 304 in 1982. I quite like the scene, especially since I was 7 at the time I made it. The fence post smack in the middle was a... bold choice, but I like the farm scene and mountains. I recently figured out where this was made - Ryder Lake near Chilliwack, BC. I have grown a bit since then, as has the foliage in this spot.
''Steller Sea lions are the largest members of the Otariidae. Adult males reach 3 m (10 ft) in length and weigh 450–1,000 kg (1,000–2,200 lbs). During June and July most of the population gathers on rookeries to breed.'' Source: https://linnet.geog.ubc.ca/efauna/Atlas/Atlas.aspx?sciname=Eumetopias%20jubatus

Multnomah Cnty in #Oregon filed a lawsuit agnst #OilandGas cmps: #Shell, #Chevron, #BP & #ExxonMobil. They say the comps were aware their products wld increase temps & have a negative effect on the planet but deceived the public about it. It is seeking damages from the #HeatDome that blasted the Pacific Northwest in 2021. That heat wave pummeled multiple states & #BritishColumbia, & killed around 800 people.
British Columbia's 2021 heat dome killed people w. schizophrenia at a higher rate than those w. other chronic illness. During the heat dome's hottest eight days 134 people diagnosed with schizophrenia died, 3x the avg. # of deaths during the same period 2006-2020
Photo taken at a marsh on Vancouver Island earlier this weekend during a photo tour with a lovely American couple from Colorado. It was great to meet with other creative minds.
I've been hearing from some US friends asking if I'm alright because of all the wildfires in Canada. There is a "fire of note" nearby and this morning we can smell the smoke. They say it's only going to get worse as the season goes on. It's pretty scary.
#ClimateDiary This morning a Canadian friend here in Eastbourne told me she has many friends who moved to #BritishColumbia for beautiful, idyllic rural lives but who now have to deal with #wildfires all the time. She sent me this 2018 article which captures all this so well. “I now see trees differently, as fire hazards”.
But she also told me that her friends in #BC do not want to admit this. They never mention the fires, 1/2
Western sword fern (Polystichum munitum)
With the new growths, ferns look beautiful at the moment in the rainforest on Vancouver Island. I love the shapes and the vibrant green.
