DHS has seen the opportunities & risks of #ArtificialIntelligence firsthand. It found a #trafficking victim by using AI to create an image of the child 10yrs older. But it has also been tricked into investigations by AI created #DeepFakes.

With the help of #AI, #deepfakes are becoming more convincing and are being used by fraudsters and official campaigns alike.
Unfortunately, regulation is constantly playing catch-up with technology. Better AI regulation, public education on media literacy, and access to trustworthy, independent media are required to combat this issue.

A Hong Kong company recently transferred the equivalent of $25.6M to cyber criminals after a scam featuring a digitally recreated version of the company’s chief financial officer, along with other employees, who appeared in a video conference call instructing an employee to transfer funds.
"Visitors to the BBC News site will now see a new button saying ‘how we verified this’ underneath images and videos on BBC Verify content. Clicking on this will show what our journalists do to verify the authenticity of images and video."

Privacy and data protection may still be the best avenue to stop such cloning, this is because at least in the UK IP protection, specially copyright, may be hit and miss and may also depend entirely on a number of conditions being right in order to gain protection.
The reality is that we could use with a much stronger protection for image and personality rights in the UK, perhaps in line with protection for likeness and voice in US publicity rights.

Executives from Adobe, Amazon, Google, IBM, Meta, Microsoft, OpenAI and TikTok gathered at the Munich Security Conference to announce a new framework for how they respond to AI-generated deepfakes that deliberately trick voters. Twelve other companies — including Elon Musk’s X — are also signing on to the accord.
“Everybody recognizes that no one tech company, no one government, no one civil society organization is able to deal with the advent of this technology and its possible nefarious use on their own,” said Nick Clegg, president of global affairs for Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, in an interview ahead of the summit.
The accord is largely symbolic, but targets increasingly realistic AI-generated images, audio and video “that deceptively fake or alter the appearance, voice, or actions of political candidates, election officials, and other key stakeholders in a democratic election, or that provide false information to voters about when, where, and how they can lawfully vote.”"
Billy Joel just released his new single's (Turn The Lights Back On) music video... and it's filled with Generative AI deepfakes of him at various ages. But it's freaking spooky good, I wasn't really sure if it was GenAI or well-costumed/made-up actors until I looked at the credits.
What legal protections do Canadians have against #deepfakes?
"In January, British Columbia became the latest province to enact legislation to help protect people against intimate pictures being shared online without their consent. But the Intimate Images Protection Act goes beyond those that merely depict nudity, near nudity or sexual acts. It makes specific reference to digitally altered images, deepfakes and AI-generated images."
"Similar legislation already exists in Saskatchewan, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island, while most other provinces have versions that don’t explicitly mention altered or generated pictures. But Daniel Tsai says none of them go nearly far enough to deal with the rampant pace of new technologies."
