Mali is among the countries currently suffering extreme heat with some areas hit by a temperature of 48,5°C, has recorded more than 100 deaths, victims of the heat wave. Malian meteorologists say the city Southwestern di Kayes recorded the hottest day in African history on April 4, 2024....
The 1997 #ElNino was 2.4C. The strongest ever recorded was 2.6C in 2015.
The Australian Bureau of Meteorology currently predicts this El Nino will break that record sometime in August, then grow to 3.0C by October, and 3.2C by November.
Looking at the data coming from different parts of the globe since the beginning of this year, it seems difficult not to come to the conclusion that we've entered a new stage of the #climateCrisis
Indicators showing anomalies that are many std dev away from past record (let alone recent mean). And all this taking place while we are barely entering an #ElNino phase.
The dynamics of #tippingPoints mean that even if this year was merely some freak outlier, it would still affect future trends.
New study suggests #ClimateChange will result in multi-year #ENSO events. i.e. like the triple-dip #LaNina we just had. Or the current #ElNino may go on for several years.
Really excellent piece on #ElNino + impacts in @TheEconomist We need to prepare now for the coming storms. As ever, poorer countries are likely to suffer more. There is nothing better than good governance and robust infrastructure to deal with the #ClimateDisruption.
#climateChange in the mix will likely make everything worse.

El Niño and global warming are mixing in alarming ways from The Economist https://econ.st/3szzc0l
El Niño is here. What's El Niño and how does it matter for Alaska seasonal climate?
NOAA's Climate Prediction Center and ACCAP at UAF are teaming up for an exciting webinar 11am-Noon AKDT Tuesday October 10.
Learn how small changes in equatorial Pacific ocean temperatures can influence Alaska weather and what past El Niños have played out across the state. #akwx#Climate#ElNino#UAF#Alaska
El Niño phenomenon's wrath has unleashed devastating floods in Somalia, affecting over a million people and displacing 400k. #ElNiño#Somalia
Displacement and livelihood loss from these floods have led to shortages of food, water, and sanitation, escalating the risk of waterborne diseases like malaria and cholera. #HumanitarianCrisis#Floods
International support is imperative to safeguard human rights and enhance resilience in the face of ongoing and future disasters. #Support#HumanRights
"Heavy rains caused by the #ElNino weather phenomenon has sent hundreds to shelters in the town of Ayolas in southern #Paraguay, with residents bracing for more flooding on the way. At least five neighborhoods in the town, about 186 miles (300 km) from capital Asuncion, were left under water... Some 35,000 people throughout the country were affected by the rains, according to national emergency ministry estimates..."
Bonus YouTube office hour this week (1pm PT on Fri!), and I'll keep this one simple: I'll be discussing and answering viewer questions (live!) on all things #ElNino and its potential implications for California. #CAwx#CAwaterhttps://t.co/Ra2RDKsbse
"Until about 50 years ago, changes in solar radiation played a significant role in shaping El Niño patterns. From the 1970s onwards, however, we see clear signals that can only be attributed to the consequences of man-made climate change."
Prediction: This #winter will be the warmest in recorded history
Story by Eric Ralls, December 4, 2023
"Thee year 2023 has been a hallmark of climatic extremes, with scorching heatwaves during the summer and autumn raising alarm bells worldwide. As we approach winter, the looming question is whether we are on the brink of experiencing the warmest winter ever recorded.
"Prelude to an unprecedented warm winter
"The period from June to October 2023 saw the global average temperature surpassing the 1991-2020 average by a staggering 0.57℃.
"Notably, August and September broke all historical records, exceeding average temperatures by 0.62℃ and 0.69℃, respectively. These figures eclipsed the previous records set in 2016, signifying a consistent trend in #GlobalWarming."
A lot of stuff out there on the storm hammering California today and tomorrow. Today, we discuss how this storm fits the overarching narrative involving El Nino and rain in southern California.
