Ugh, I really tried to stay out of #fediverse drama but I guess I have to say a few things. Most of you know me as a #firefish core team member, so I think I owe it to the admins of almost 500 firefish servers out there and to the almost 5000 members of firefish.social.
So, yeah, if you haven't noticed, things aren't looking good for firefish. Its owner, Kainoa, has practically abandoned the project, which had its last stable release out on July. My last message to them was a week ago, and I haven't heard back since. Firefish.social, besides the other severe technical problems it's had due to mismanagement in the last few months, now also has serious federation issues. I hope Kainoa is well irl, but this is irresponsible and unacceptable.
I hear some of you saying "but you're in the core team too, don't try to put the blame elsewhere!". So I have to explain what being a core team member in firefish meant. Kainoa invited me, Namekuji and a few others to be part of the "core team", but kept all decisions and responsibilities. We didn't co-own this. We never shared donations. We were just volunteers, who were honestly trying to make it a great project. This didn't work well due to concentration of power to one person, who didn't keep their promises. I don't mean to be harsh to Kainoa, I mean we knew they were only 19 when they started the project. Still, it's a bummer to anyone who chose to trust and support Firefish. This includes myself.
I don't know if it's early to consider firefish a dead project, but it sure seems like that for a few months now. Maybe it can be resurrected, idk. It's all up to Kainoa.
In the meantime, Namekuji and I are starting #Catodon, which will have some differences with Firefish, and will include many changes I had discussed with Kainoa but were never implemented. If you decide to stick with us, we promise to be serious about this. I strongly believe in the fediverse and its potential, and I want to build a great platform for it. This was my goal when I chose to be involved in Calckey/Firefish. It's still my goal with Catodon, only this time I can stand behind it 100%, as the project will be co-managed by Namekuji and me. If Firefish left you with a bitter aftertaste, we hope we can build a better relationship and prove ourselves worthy of your trust. Catodon will go public in a matter of days, possibly even hours. We'll have more to say about its direction then.
In the meantime, I just wanted to share my apologies for any inconvenience regarding Firefish, as I'm still technically a core team member, whatever that means. But frankly, I tried so hard to make things go differently - but there's only so much you can do when it's someone else's project. I'm really sorry for how things went.
But this is not the end of the fedi journey for me. I'm super excited about the chance to do some things right this time with Catodon. Life goes on, I guess! Hope to see you soon on our #codeberg repo, so we can start a new creative adventure together =)

If you're fleeing #Tumblr and checking out the #fediverse, welcome! I hope you find a home here. You have quite a few options with #Mastodon, #Miskey, #Firefish#Sharkey (I'm posting this from sharkey.world), and the practically thousands of instances within those. Each have their own flavor and features, so don't feel you have to settle on one off the bat. It's not unusual to see new users sign up on one instance, then eventually move to another, then another before they find the community that fits them best.
Looking for something more "bloggy"? Bear Blog and Pika are two services offering simple blogging tools with an emphasis on "small blogging". They are unassociated with the major blogging platforms and offer a fresh alternative to them.

The significance of this event is many of the Fire Fish Developers have previously come forward claiming the lead developer vanished. Unfortunately, the lead developer treated their project as a centralized project, meaning that they were the sole person making decisions, giving no access to accounts or code changes or even donations, despite having a team behind them.
Es kommt leider wohl genauso, wie ich es befürchtet habe. Die Firefish Basteltruppe scheint mit ihren eigenen Modifikationen und Entwicklungen überfordert zu sein.
Deren eigener #Entwicklungsserver ist seit rund zwei Wochen offline, und Firefish-Social, nun ja, wer dort ein Konto hat, kann sicherlich näheres berichten.
Seit über drei Monaten erscheint kein neuer #Release und der zuletzt veröffentlichte Release-Kandidat scheint mir auch nur eine umbenannte #Entwicklerversion zu sein. Zudem hat die Datenbank bei mir die vierfache Größe meiner Misskey-Datenbank 😲
Die aktuelle Version sieht in vielen Bereichen noch ganz stark wie #Misskey aus, aber mir scheint dieser Fork viele der Neuerungen wie die »Reactions«, die für mich mit ein Grund war #Firefish zu testen, werden wohl Stück für Stück auch dort integriert, die wesentlich besseren Voraussetzungen für eine wirklich funktionierende Instanz zu haben.
Ich werde denjenigen, denen ich bereits auf meiner Firefish-Instanz folge, auch hier erneut folgen.

Ich schreibe einen Artikel über den #FediverseFachtag und in dem Rahmen natürlich auch über das #Fediverse . Zielgruppe sind Leute, die wahrscheinlich zum Großteil noch gar nix vom Fediverse gehört haben.
Dazu bin ich dabei, eine Tabelle zu erstellen, in der einige Fedi-Dienste sowie deren Haupt-/ besondere Funktionen aufgeführt werden sollen.
Das ist der derzeitige Entwurf:

Ein Vergleich mit kommerziellen Plattformen ist natürlich immer nur zum Teil passend. Ich kenne auch keinen der kommerziellen Dienste aus eigener Erfahrung, aber für die avisierte Zielgruppe kann so ein Vergleich vielleicht trotzdem eine hilfreiche Orientierung sein. Vielleicht gibt es da aber auch Vergleiche, die passender sind. Einige Dienste (bspw. Medium, Podigee) kannte ich auch noch nicht mal vom Namen her, sondern habe das nur aus ähnlichen Vergleichstabellen übernommen.
Zu den "besonderen Funktionen":
Insbesondere Friendica, Firefish und v.a. Hubzilla haben so viele Funktionen, dass diese im Rahmen der Tabelle nur exemplarisch aufgeführt werden können und die Auswahl ist subjektiv. Hier wäre die Frage, ob das eine passende Auswahl ist, ob besonders wichtige fehlen oder ob andere Funktionen wichtiger oder besonderer sind.

Beeindruckend. Der Umzug von #Mastodon zu #Firefish hat tatsächlich reibungslos geklappt. Nicht nur die #Follower wurden 1:1 übertragen, sogar die alten Posts konnte ich mitnehmen. Das geht ja nichmal von Mastodon zu Mastodon. Wahnsinn!
Is #Mastodon really viable for the small to medium-sized operator?

We did something simple. With a Mastodon tab open we hit Ctrl+Shift+E to get the Network Tab. With an inactive thread open in Mastodon, we went to another website to read an article.
An hour passes and what we discovered shocked us. Mastodon somehow justified sending us 55MB of data. The #NetworkTab said 55MB over 1500 requests (53MB transferred).
🥥 Mad propz to my #Fediverse instance and its #admins for making #Mastodon suddenly work properly again on my mobile devices -- tablet, phone.
For weeks it had been agonizingly slow to load and/or post because of frequent time outs and retry notices.
Was some tweak performed at the server, or did signing up for a monthly donation make the difference?
Don't know.
In any case, since I dread switching servers to beige.party or #Firefish, I will be staying right where I am for the time being. 🥥
#firefish and #misskey seem to have problems with the WordPress Plugin. Could be the signature maybe!?! Is there someone who can help me debug this issue?

Überzeugt habe ich mich dann damit, dass ich sowieso mal einen "richtigen" Server haben wollte, auf dem ich mich völlig frei austoben kann. Und die sind inzwischen echt durchaus erschwinglich geworden!
Beeindruckt war ich, wie leicht sich #FireFish installieren lässt! 😳
Einfach einen Ubuntu VPS ordern, curl, wget und git installieren und dann ein Installationskript starten, dessen Parameter man noch leicht anpassen muss.
Das Skript installiert und konfiguriert alles nötige, wenn man will. Sogar #Nginx und alle anderen benötigten Services, wenn sie noch nicht vorhanden sind. Nginx und PostreSQL hatte ich sogar vorher installiert, weil ich nicht sicher war, wie weit das Skript geht. Es kam auch mit vorheriger "Teilinstallation" klar.
Man braucht dann ein wenig Zeit und vor allem darf man bei dem Skript nicht nervös werden 😀, es gab 2 Stellen, an dem es echt sehr lange ohne Meldung "hing". Aber lief dann total ohne Probleme durch.

Die Zahl der Twitter-Alternativen wächst und wächst. Während die meisten das Vorbild ziemlich stark nachbauen, gibt es aber auch Versuche, weiterzudenken.
jetzt auch mit 2 vertikal gestalteten Arbeitsbereichen und einem neuen Arbeitsbereich für meine abonnierten Firefish-Channels. Ein Thema, womit ich mich bisher nur am Rande beschäftigt habe.
Nicht zuletzt auch wegen der Reaktionen auf meinen letzten Beitrag zum Thema, habe ich meine diesbezügliche Firefish-Nutzerseite noch einmal grundlegend überarbeitet:
Den Usecase der einzelnen Arbeitsbereiche habe ich noch einmal hervorgehoben.
Als allgemeine Einführung ins wichtige Thema "Firefish-Layout" habe ich mit freundlicher Einwilligung von Pepe noch einmal zur sehr hilfreichen "Firefish KnowledgeDB" verlinkt.

I'm definitely moving away from #Firefish (@irfan) and making this #Sharkey instance my new home. Most of my exports have finally completed (why does it take so long even just to export small following lists and such?), and I'm just waiting for my notes/posts export to hopefully complete sooner than later since I heard that migrating away from FF would cause you to lose access to the account or something like that? Idk sounds kinda weird and complicated. Happy to be moving, and happy to see others have moved too from such a dumpster fire of an instance of an otherwise neat service/project.
