The Destruction of Palestine Is the Destruction of the Earth

The last six months of genocide in Gaza have ushered in a new phase in a long history of colonization and extraction that reaches back to the nineteenth century. To truly understand the present crisis, Andreas Malm argues, requires a longue durée analysis of Palestine's subjugation to fossil empire.

Once again there is a mismatch between words & deeds on climate change & fossil fuels... sometimes I wonder whether our (raging) political elites don't understands that information flows around the world easily & so hypocrisy like this will easily be revealed.... or actually they just don't care & take us for idiots.

Its no use just shutting fossil fuel investment/expansion(s), the world is a single system!

A mere 57 oil, gas, coal and cement producers are directly linked to 80% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions since the 2016 Paris climate agreement, a study by Carbon Majors Database has shown.
In the database of 122 of the world’s biggest historical climate polluters, the researchers found that 65% of state entities and 55% of private-sector companies had scaled up production.

“It is morally reprehensible for companies to continue expanding exploration and production of carbon fuels in the face of knowledge now for decades that their products are harmful,” said Richard Heede, who established the Carbon Majors dataset in 2013. “Don’t blame consumers who have been forced to be reliant on oil and gas due to government capture by oil and gas companies.”

Senate Bill 1291 bans companies that do business with the state from boycotting energy industries, including #FossilFuels, and the #firearm industry."

: "Climate scientists have warned that expanding gas infrastructure risks undermining the global efforts to contain global warming.

But data centres’ voracious power needs are set to rocket, as cloud storage facilities, crypto mining and AI all add strain to grids. Microsoft alone is opening a new data centre globally every three days.

These power hungry operations will together consume more than 480 terawatt hours of electricity, or almost a tenth of total US power demand, by 2035, up from 4.5 per cent in 2025, according to S&P Global Commodity Insights.

The International Energy Agency estimates power demand from data centres globally could top 1,000 TWh by 2026 — double 2022 levels and an increase equivalent to Germany’s total power demand.

Dominion Energy, which supplies Virginia’s fast-growing data centre sector, said in a recent strategic plan that until zero-carbon energy could offer constant power, gas units would be the “most affordable and reliable” option." https://www.ft.com/content/1f93b9b2-b264-44e2-87cc-83c04d8f1e2b

You have to love the headline:

It just so neatly encapsulates some of our country's problems. Will you sign the Australia Institute petition to greatly increase the Petroleum Resource Rent Tax? The Institute also has a good video summarising their position on this issue.
