Despite the sadness of seeing them leave the platform I'm working on, I can't express how cool it is to be able to still follow people who moved to any other platform is compatible with, including Mastodon, Diaspora, and more, all from my same account.

It's completely unheard of in most other social media context, and yet here it's completely seamless.

Do I know anyone on ?

Any instance recommendations?

Is there anything I should know about finding an instance to try out?

It's interesting sitting here on an old version of seeing someone on server telling their fellow user that posting to unlisted will opt-out of when I can see Unlisted posts in my antennas quite easily though I believe this has been rightly rectified in the newest versions of [ / but need to confirm]. Being hidden from the Explore tab on Mastodon is not the same as being unsearchable across the fediverse. Frankly, there's little understanding even among admins across the about what's a Mastodon / Mastodon API function that is federated to other Mastodon servers but doesn't translate well outside of Mastodon on other connected platforms like and it's forks, and , or rapidly growing platforms like and . Kbin also scrapes posts from across the fediverse and puts them into its own magazines.

Unfortunately simple, up-to-date documentation doesn't really exist to explain the realities of federation vs what your admin said was the reality. AP was not built with privacy in mind, and 'security through obscurity' was mostly a Mastodon thing from when folks thought either the Mastoverse was almost the dark web, or the whole fediverse [which has never been the case], and Google et al weren't interested in scraping it.

Unfortunately we have a cadre of devs across all fedi platforms who'll give glowing lip-service to both the fedi and ActivityPub histories of being built by queer or other minority identities but still won't work on giving folks the granular and controls that weren't included in those protocols, and whose feature roadmaps now just look like bird site 2.0 funded by the milquetoast liberals in political tech who provide their seed money.

Beyond Mastodon and GoToSocial, every other fediverse project treats posting to public as opting in to search and indexing. Indeed, this is pretty much how the ActivityPub protocol handles such too.

I am really baffled- suddenly my site elsica.social site didn't show any contents anymore, just some menus, then I rebooted the server and now it says Internal Server Error. I am very close to give upon it, can't deal with erratic behavior for no reason... I don't even have a clue where to start looking for the problem, as there was no known trigger for this problem, whatsoever, probably some external event, I don't know... any hints appreciated. @helpers @admins

I'm trying to do a bit of a social media detox (more just timeboxing my social media usage) but still want to post things. I therefore think I may add a "focus mode" to Relatica. My thought is that in focus mode is really about shutting out access to the timeline. So the only timeline you'll be able to see are your own posts. Notifications would be disable as with all other timelines. Creating posts will be fine. Browsing comments on your posts and commenting on comments would work too. Just a thought...

I’ve created a profile on pixelfed and friendica, but it sure feels like mastodon is the best place to be inside the fediverse.

If you feel like following me you can find me at @annamariaeriksson and @GreatDaneManiac

I’m still trying to get all my blogs to work with the fediverse. It’s very complicated if you have a multi site with sub folder installs for each site.

Gibts hier irgendwelche Tricks?

hankg, to rant

It seems clear to me that the tech press, even those friendly to decentralization, are only interested in Threads, Bluesky, and whatever new idea some other VC fund or billionaire come up with. Mastodon and AP are mentioned in passing if at all. That's unfortunate. It's not just a chasing the money thing because it's the likes of people who have proven not to succumb to that, I'm not naming names. We on the D* and AP side of the fediverse, or social web as I have heard people call it recently, can still go about our business improving things incrementally and doing what we've always done. If another wave comes and we catch it fine. The tech press and pundits, even fediverse friendly ones, have sadly moved on. Ironically most of the articles I see on why they like Bluesky more than Mastodon, the rest of the fediverse doesn't get recognized at all ever and never has by these same people again except maybe in passing, are reasons why I haven't liked my Bluesky experience (which I've thankfully integrated into the Friendica part of the fediverse I reside in thanks to its bridge). But anyway...back to incremental improvement and growth and doing our own thing with the "normies" not considering us a valid option for the time being again.

If you haven't heard, sadly, #ChirpSocial, one of the popular #ActivityPub “groups” platform, is shutting down “probably” on February 29th.

In an email they sent to admins, the owner and developer can no longer support https://chirp.social financially as they failed to find a new job after they were laid off by #Google last year.

So, if you have a Chirp.Social groups, either move to #Guppe (https://a.gup.pe) (as suggested by Chirp.Social), or if I may, to #FediaIO (https://fedia.io), an #Mbin [flagship] instance.

This reminds us the importance of having a built-in groups feature, and one where the groups feature actually federates.

Back in 2008, when the #Fediverse was born, we did have a built-in federated groups in #Laconica / #StatusNet (today known as #GNUsocial). We used bang (!) instead of at (@). A built-in groups feature is more stable as established instances can host them.

Today, we have #Friendica and #Hubzilla (as well as #Streams-based instances) to fill in that, as groups is a built-in feature in those software products. It's just a matter of finding an instance that's open to hosting groups for any topic for the ActivityPub protocol.

That said, any Friendica, Hubzilla, Streams-based instances you suggest for groups?

Yesterday in 2022 I moved over to this instance after my old instance of 4 years died. Yesterday the "On this day" option appeared in the 2022 archive page, and I was able to see everything I posted that day 2 years ago. I can also see it for last year as well. Not going to brag but I made that feature. It actually blows me away that I was able to do it with only a laymans understanding of coding.. So surreal.

@kbin
Can I post to a magazine from , etc.?

...with communities it works like this, that a post appears in the community if I tag the community account.
If this post arrives in the magazine, that would already be proof that it also works this way with kbin ;-)
Is there anything more to consider beyond that? Are there any special features?
How are "Title" and "Body" handled and displayed?

Dear ,
When writing new posts like this one and also when writing comments aka replies, how do I auto complete user display names when mentioning them? Is it keyboard accessible.

Fediverse | Mastodon: Eine Sache der Beitragslänge

Interessant.

@tutorial

Summing up tests "activating" and "deactivating" @[Mentioned people only] on . Apparently there have been some changes.
(from v3 to v4?)

You can't add more people into already existing posts. They won't be able to display it nore get notifications.
(if that ever existed)

You can deactivate/delete mentions, the profile won't get notifications of updates but still can see or search those toots.
note:
still awaiting confirmation of behaviour on
