Can someone with mad computer skillz tell me if this is legit, or if doing so will open a wormhole to a shady hacker underworld that immediately steals my identity?
(also, if any members of the shady hacker underworld are reading this and tempted to respond, I’ll only believe you if you say “scout’s honor”. Can’t fool me!)
When Bing, Microsoft’s search engine platform, went down early yesterday, it took down a number of services with it, including ChatGPT search, Yahoo, and DuckDuckGo — all of which rely on the Bing API to operate.
With the majority of Google search alternatives taken out in one fell swoop, it highlighted the lack of competition that Google search truly has, and the implications that has on our online experience. Is there another way? @arstechnica has more.
"Something future historians will struggle to explain is that, in the 21st century, all of human knowledge became instantly available to anyone in the world, and the primary effect was to make everyone dumber.”
»Argon2 vs. bcrypt vs. scrypt: which hashing algorithm is right for you?«
As far as I know, Argon2 is a current secure solution for storing passwords. In my opinion, too many online services do not use this solution or do not fund it (fast enough) to update their services.
In 2019, a content creator and model named Belle Delphine went viral for selling jars of her bathwater. The stunt earned her $90K in profits, but PayPal then closed her account so she never saw a dime of the money until she wrote about it on X earlier this month. Here's more from @theverge.

Here is yet another example as a reminder:
If your bank "contacts you" DO NOTHING until you have phoned your bank to check on the validity of the contact.
"A billionaire got mad, bought your favourite social media site and ran it into the ground. A different billionaire got mad, bought the magazine site you liked to read on your lunchbreak and shut it down completely. "
Design, Digested 53 is out! Of the few articles I read the past couple of months, the most memorable are about smartphones use and the ways modern tech can make us miserable.

Another reason to add #AltText to your photos, basically, anywhere, is that, yes, there are sighted people that disable all images in their browsers because it's faster to browse. #Internet#Tech#Technology#Accessibility
Something created in 1989 that changed how people used , viewed then-nascent #Internet had nearly vanished by 2024. Nearly because dogged researchers, enthusiasts at The Serial Port channel on YouTube have found what is likely the last existing copy of #Archie. Archie, first crafted by Alan Emtage while a student at McGill Univ in Montreal allowed for searching various "anonymous" #FTP servers around what was then very small web of unis, researchers, govt military nodes. https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2024/05/archie-the-internets-first-search-engine-is-rescued-and-running/
