Cougar attacks mountain bikers on Washington trail:
https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/cougar-attacks-mountain-bikers-on-washington-trail/ar-BB1iu6YM

Sounds actually terrifying. I mean, I can out-peddle antsy geese I've encountered on the canal towpath! To decide as a group that you're going to stop and wrestle with a mountain lion until help arrives must have been one hell of a decision!

I also like the double meaning in the headline, like a randy middle-aged woman smelt fresh blood!!!

Former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson calls Tucker Carlson 'a traitor' over Vladimir Putin interview

Thoughts on Traitor Tucker:

Carlson wanted the interview to be a political sensation and an information breakthrough.

It turned out to be mediocre.

Carlson was mentally absent from the interview. There was no active manner of conducting the conversation.

He looked completely superfluous. He was being used, and he finally realized that.

Labour ditches £28bn green investment pledge:

Absolutely shower of shite.

We could be world leader in a strong immerging market of "green jobs", but why not forsake that long term growth opportunity for short term financial gain?

And who needs a habitable planet anyway?

Pathetic.

Google Alert popped up another "gem". Puff piece coverage of a company that "gives jobs" to disabled adults.

  • Abled founders speak, not a single disabled person interviewed.

  • Stated that 80% disabled people are unemployed but didn't go into how many workplaces flout ADA, Sect 504 and Sect 508.

  • No mention of whether it's a "sheltered workshop" and what disabled people are paid compared to what abled people are paid in the company.

  • It's a 501 (c) 3 but what's the gap between what the entry-level disabled worker makes and the abled top brass make?

I did a web search. This was a Connecticut company being featured on an SF Bay Area news segment. I found the press release. And basically the segment was free advertising for the company. This is why abled people "do things for" disabled people.

I used to not see this stuff, either. Even after I became disabled. But once others in the disability community gave me the tools to think about this stuff, that changed.

And I'm tooting about it now trying to pay it forward.

THINK about how disability stories are covered and who's telling the story.

It could be this is a genuinely good company doing good things in an equitable and sustainable way.

But you don't know because the "news" program didn't do actual journalism. Because abled people have been trained to package disability in certain ways that are about keeping systemic ableism in place while making abled people feel good about it.

We need better reporting on disability issues. And newsrooms need more diversely disabled reporters. https://ncdj.org/

It's Friday time! Since I seem to have forgotten to post last week's , we'll do two questions this week, the first question and my favorite.

In the 2024 Iowa GOP caucuses, Donald Trump won 51% of the vote, and Nikki Haley and Ron DeSantis split about 40%. Which very conservative candidate was the only other person to get more than 1% of the vote?

Story from UC Davis not many are taking notice of is a huge, confusing upset in student government. Some may think that unimportant, but not only are they viewed as the voice of students, they run the bus system (Unitrans) that Davis depends on. It is enormously important that UC Davis student gov't be run well.

Yet turnout for elections is usually very low and most students don't know what their student gov't does.

Challenge:

Choose a major CA newspaper like LA Times or SJ Mercury

Tally how many articles about University of California are about NCAA sports teams vs how many are about this giant component of our state budget, how it's run, how well it's doing its job of educating the people of California, and conducting research in the public interest.

In Newark, NJ, kids will now be able to vote in their school board elections. Voting age has been lowered to 16.

https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZPRcbQRhv/

https://newjerseyglobe.com/local/newark-lowers-voting-age-for-school-board-elections-to-16/

This needs to go national. Consider how numerous states have been rolling back child labor laws. That should also be stopped, but if you want kids to have jobs then they deserve voting rights.
