🚨RING THE ALARM! 🚨The Eugene Weekly, a free print newspaper in Oregon for 40+ years, is a victim of embezzlement. They found out about the theft just before Christmas, and they've already laid off staff.

But EW isn't dead yet! We can help them get over the hump while the crime is being investigated and -- fingers crossed -- they recoup some of the lost money, including retirement funds and bills owed to vendors.

Hello everyone, it's Friday, and we got a shoutout in @niemanlab Predictions for Journalism, 2024!

From our real-time line-item budget to completely rebuilding our audience on Mastodon and supporting a young, diverse crop of journalists, we've shown time and time again that we are the future of news. We're glad that our effort is recognized by Michael Greshko and the Nieman Lab.

“We're starting to see flickers of this DIY energy within corners of science media. The nonprofit Gen-Z newsroom The Xylom, founded by Alex Ip, covers subjects such as climate and COVID- 19 through a distinctly global lens; by its measure, it's the only North American news outlet that regularly publishes science stories in Nepali.”

This is the first time, that I have ever in my lifetime had to do yard work and cut the lawn in December. Understand I live in the Chicago area and normally the temps are around 32-39 degrees, and the grass has stopped growing. And I am not the only one in the neighborhood who has cut their grass in December. Climate change is real.

On November 30th, Stay Home Because You're Well Day gives us an excuse to stay in for the day. We all need a break, and it is nice to take it when we are healthy and can enjoy it. That said, if everyone in the working world took the same day to stay home because we were well, chaos would ensue. We all need time alone. It is essential to disconnect from our daily routines. Sometimes a checklist of things we need to do calls to us. Others have no idea what we'd do left to our own devices. #

THE SANDCREEK MASSACRE

At dawn on November 29, hundreds of U.S. soldiers led by Colonel John Chivington surrounded the village. Residents responded by waving white flags and pleading for mercy; one of the chiefs even raised the American flag in an attempt to demonstrate that he, too, was American. Ignoring these symbols of surrender and peace, the white troops opened fire with carbines and cannons, slaughtering more than 200 Native American people. Most of the victims of the massacre were women, children, and the elderly and infirm. After the massacre, the troops burned the village, mutilated the bodies of the deceased, and removed body parts to keep as trophies. Some scalps of the dead became props in plays that the troops later performed to celebrate, as one soldier boasted, “almost an annihilation of the entire tribe.”

As hard as it is to get good journalism from the large newspapers in the US (thanks to corporate owners...not necessarily due to lack of journalists), it is much harder getting good local news for those who don't live in the largest cities.

If you have a local newspaper or blogger who you appreciate, give them a shoutout in the replies!

On November 20th, National Absurdity Day reigns supreme. Oddness and weirdness take over. We're not sure why, but it does. Absurdity Day is also a day to have fun and do crazy, zany, and absurd things. Use the day as an excuse to let out the silly antics hidden inside them. You can do things you have wanted to do that make absolutely no sense at all, and it will be okay because you will be celebrating this National Day.
