Did you know that a 22-year-old Latina is now taking over a local newspaper in Georgia?

Meet Andrea Gutierrez. Last week, she was named Editor of Bryan County News, after her predecessor retired.

alexip718,
@alexip718@journa.host avatar

Bryan County is located in Coastal Georgia, one county away from Savannah. It has around 45,000 residents and voted for Trump by 35 points in 2020.

This is what Richmond Hill, where BCN is headquartered, looked like when I reported there in 2021. It's beautiful.

Andrea grew up in Savannah and then went to UGA Grady, where she was the campus NAHJ chapter chair.

Please support Andrea and her team at Bryan County News in any way you can. Their one-year subscription is only $39.

As the closest state in the 2020 election and with the 2024 elections around the corner, the stakes have never been higher.

Since leaving Twitter, I've been trying to figure out what my journalism-y socials look like. (Threads: A sad Potemkin village where I just share articles. Bluesky: A fun, bitchy hotel cafeteria that still seems ill-suited to news.) I've been trying to use Mastodon for more hard news stuff, but I'm having a hard time getting my feed to be both active and relevant.

So I'm trying a few experiments to see if I can rejig my good. If you've got good journalism follow suggestions, send em my way.

We mostly agree. But we are holding out hope that Mastodon, or something similar, will prosper and play that role -- better than Twitter ever did.

In addition to hope, we're doing what we can to make it work.
