DBA a life in the shadows
Database administration is weird. The job is a strange combination of theory and practice, strictness and loose rules mixed together in a magic blend.

The DBA is probably one of the most obscure and one of the less appreciated roles within the IT organisations.

Today is the day to say thank you to your DBA!

The extreme financial problems in are less about the settlement of an case & more about the disastrous implementation of an IT system.

While this has been discussed publicly in the past, its worth emphasising its critical & central role in Birmingham's problems.... like the IT problems at the Post Office, a large multinational firm seems to be causing havoc with impunity!

I was sitting in a bar with some friends, wearing a classic @torproject onion-logo shirt, when a guy turned around and asked if that was a reference to The Onion magazine. Turned out he was a developer at . We started talking about IT security, encryption, anonymity, how Tor works etc.

When he left, he opened his wallet and handed me a 100€ bill, and asked me to put it towards Tor relay ops.

This is how @torservers got started. So, in some sense, Oracle founded it. True story.

This is an unusal Egyptian combining two techniques:

A yes/no answer based on the individual appearance of the god
+
a personal encounter with the god who will talk to the practitioner.

It's also extremely short for an Egyptian divination and the invoked god is not mentioned by name.

Billionaire Larry Ellison plotted with aides on call about overturning election, report says

"According to the Post, the call took place on 14 November 2020, less than a week after Election Day resulted in Mr Trump’s stunning defeat in previous strongholds like Arizona and Georgia.

Others on the call included Jay Sekulow, an attorney for the White House, as well as Fox News’s Sean Hannity and Sen Lindsey Graham"

🕺 New Changelog & Friends!

Red Hat’s decision to lock down RHEL sources behind a subscription paywall was met with much ire and opened opportunity for Oracle to get a smack in and SUSE to announce a fork with $10 million behind it 🥊

Few RHEL community members have been as publicly irate as @geerlingguy, so we invited him on the show to discuss 💬

It blows my mind that it's a recorded fact that Larry Ellison sent money and people to help the January 6th coup plotters and Oracle has still not been banned from government contracting.

And that he isn't trying to assemble all of the legal talent to defend himself in Federal court.

So about that French deck I've been pining away for...

It's so gorgeous in person! The cards are BIG so unless you have a big table, it is not ideal for a grand tableaux spread. I only wish I understood French so I can read what her guidebook has to say, always curious about other readers interpretations.

blacklight, to Java

This is an interesting dark pattern: send informal unsolicited emails to businesses ("let's have a chat about licensing, so we can find out what fits you best") in order to extort information about how they are running Java on their machines and try and squeeze more money out of them.

Those who respond to these emails are actually providing with information about how they deploy Java. But they are just talking to a salesperson, not to an engineer.

For context: Oracle's current Java licenses are on a per-CPU basis. You want to run your Java application on a beefier server with more cores? Your Java licensing costs are likely to double overnight. Not only, but Oracle has apparently harassed businesses that run Java on virtual machines too, claiming that virtual cores should also be accounted for and therefore you need a license for each virtual machine you spawn - somebody reported a proposed price tag of $120,000 for running Oracle Java on five servers with a bunch of VMs.

They mentioned that they may consider a per-employee licensing model instead. While this would be slightly fairer, nothing has been set in stone yet: don't engage in such discussions informally with a company that, at the current state, may simply use your information against you.

Also, avoid Oracle Java entirely if you can. Oracle's only mission is to cannibalize open-source projects, close them and profit from them by squeezing money from businesses that just need a compiler, an OS or a database in order to function.

In the process, they add literally zero value to our industry - despite benefiting from FOSS a lot, the weight of their contribution back to the community is nearly negligible. Oracle deserves to rot in its greed and be mourned by nobody.

If you use Java in your infrastructure, consider using OpenJDK, Zulu or other open-source implementations. You'll save on your bills, you won't have to count each single core that you run your applications on, you won't have to fear sudden licensing changes that will badly hit your wallet, you'll support FOSS, and contribute to starve off an evil parasite in our industry whose demise is long overdue.

Throwing a hail mary. Anyone I know working with php and oci8 for oracle? Just built two boxes following Red Hat instructions, one with php8 and one with php 8.1. Both using 'Oracle Instant Client', and can connect using sqlplus. No errors on building/loading php-fpm but both give the same error "undeclared function oci_connect()". I am not a php programmer or a oracle dba, just a stuck in the middle sysadmin. #monday #php #oracle

I wrote about the latest Ecosystem report from New Relic: https://www.infoq.com/news/2024/05/new-relic-java-2024/ - some interesting takeaways. In particular:

1.) Yes, you should definitely be thinking of Java 8 as a legacy version now

2.) continue to lose ground as a vendor (from 75% market share in 2020, to 34.5% in 2022 to 20.8% in 2024) - now just a couple of points clear of Eclipse's Adoptium distribution and Amazon's Corretto,
