Since "invariably" means -- all the time (without variation).

Why does it sound like it means -- most of the time (with rare variation)?

Interesting thought.

Saying "kind of" has two different meanings -- "This ice cream tastes kind of funny" and "I don't like this kind of ice cream".

But "kinda" only means the first one.

NASA Unveils Design for Message Heading to Jupiter’s Moon Europa

The moon shows strong evidence of an ocean under its icy crust, with more than twice the amount of water of all of Earth’s oceans combined. A triangular metal plate on the spacecraft will honor that connection to Earth in several ways.

TIL whelm is a word

It means engulf, submerge, or bury.
"a swimmer whelmed in a raging storm"
or
flow or heap up abundantly.
"the brook whelmed up from its source"

but now I wonder how we got the under and over on it.

Whenever I use the word "short" in an expression e.g. "I came up short" "sorry if I was short with you" "I stopped short of..." it feels like a self-referential play on words but, then I remember, on the internet nobody knows you're short!
