Amnesty International Indonesia is calling for an evaluation of the placement of TNI (Indonesian military) in Papua after a video of a Papuan man being tortured by several soldiers at the Gome Post in Puncak regency, Central Papua, went viral on social media. “This incident was a [case of] cruel and inhuman torture that really...
I'm Agas Ramirez, host of the #HERstory#SoutheastAsia#Podcast. I share women's history from the region, like the stories of Supayalat of #Myanmar , the Trung Sisters of #Vietnam , Prinsesa Urduja of the #Philippines , & Emiria Sunassa of #Indonesia . My latest series is on the #Manila Carnival (1908-1939).
Follow me for all things Southeast Asia! Looking forward to reblogging your posts. #TootSEA
When I was growing up I was a devout student of southeast Asian colonial and post-colonial history but my studies largely focused on the British empire. I am now spending my free time reading about the Dutch.
For example, the village of Atar in Sumatra, Indonesia has many migrants who move to Jakarta and other big cities to own or work in photocopy shops. As a result, there is a giant statue of a photocopy machine in the village
Mina Setra remembers a time before oil palm plantations changed the landscape of her childhood home. Setra, an Indigenous Dayak Pompakng, grew up when forests surrounded her village in the Indonesian province of West Kalimantan on the island of Borneo. Setra and her brother would spend their days canoeing on a nearby river, she...

An Indonesian court has rejected lawsuits filed by two plantation companies operating in the Tanah Merah mega oil palm plantation project in the country’s Papua region.
The ruling means the companies are legally required to stop clearing forest in their concessions and preserve what remains.
Look at this Kue Lumpur from #Indonesia! This traditional cake is made of flour and coconut milk and topped with raisins. It's also known as "mud cake."

Coastal erosion on the west coast of Indonesia’s Sulawesi Island is so advanced that seawater has penetrated the groundwater supply that tens of thousands use for drinking water.
The communities have yet to be served by utility water provision, so families are resorting to costly supplies of water from private distributors.
New research into #Ghostroads - informal roads, not officially commissioned or mapped - in #Indonesia and their significant impacts on deforestation.
The wider ecological harm of roads is welll known and we have discussed it here several times already (@davidho @inquiline), but this research is really solid and also interesting to focus in on ghostroads. #Rainforests
Student journalists in Indonesia face backlash after reporting on sexual harassment
Students say they are being targeted with expulsion, physical assault and death threats after writing about sensitive subjects
Yolanda Agne, 23, was just months away from graduating in journalism at a university in Maluku province, Indonesia, when she was banned from finishing her studies.
For this piece, I explored #Indonesia & #Malaysia's plans to be carbon-storage hubs, aided by #Japan. They want to store CO2 shipped from abroad. But, in reality, these plans are greenwashing and may be for another alternative - using CO2 to tap difficult #oil and #gas fields.
Note that this is my most favourite food/dish - but this isn't the place that serves the best of it. Nasi Ayam #Geprek/#Gepuk + Tahu & Tempe Goreng + Kubis Goreng combo IS THE SINGLE BEST THING IN THE WORLD and I mourn those who have no access to this or cannot eat/enjoy #spicy food.
Ayam Gepuk Pak Gembus (Rasta TTDI) is where I'm first introduced to it years ago pre-COVID. They used to serve the Sambal + Kacang directly on top of the chicken and give you a bottle of Kicap (soy sauce) for you to take on your own, but now they've gone more commercialised and mainstream, they just serve them in a small tub and a sauce packet respectively instead. Happy to report that both the Nasi (rice) and Sambal/Kacang can still be refilled free of charge.
This dish used to be super cheap and my go-to when I was studying. I'd fetch my partner from UM and head right to Rasta to eat this every couple of days or so. Now they're expensive (in comparison to how incredibly cheap it was), and they're still really good, but my partner and I have both found another place that serves way better Ayam Gepuk. Pak Gembus @ Rasta will always be special to me tho for being the OG.
Indonesia’s navy forcibly pushed a boat packed with Rohingya refugees back into international waters after the vessel approached its shores. The province of Aceh in particular has seen a sharp increase in boats from Bangladesh carrying refugees who are escaping crowded camps, but are still facing hostilities from fellow Muslims in Indonesia. Read more about the crisis from NBC News.
I initially went to #Indonesia, back in 2011, because of the country’s troubling history with deforestation, driven primarily, historically, by demand for tropical commodities including #palmoil#paperpulp & #rubber.
In the past decade, as I’ve covered these issues for numerous outlet, much has changed. In some ways there has been real progress in increasing traceability and stemming deforestation, but at the same time, much of the supply chain remains opaque.
Indonesia burned 33% more coal in 2022 than the year before, contributing to a 20% increase in the country’s carbon emissions from fossil fuels, an analysis of official data shows.
This will likely catapult Indonesia to become the world’s sixth-highest fossil CO2 emitter, behind Japan, according to the analysis.
