What’s your favorite live streaming platform? I prefer #YouTube as it’s my favorite entertainment app, but most creators there seem to stream on #twitch.
I know consolidation isn’t a good thing, but I kinda wish everyone just streamed on YouTube.
Because it's part of the Fediverse, you can follow OwnCast accounts from Mastodon etc, and when they go live you will see a post in your timeline to let you know.
For example, the RetroStrangeTV livestream can be viewed at:
Let me start by saying that you don't need to mess with your NAT or ISP to get aired on thirdparty #PeerTube instance. #Owncast, on the other hand, would require you to set up some reverse proxy in order to let others see you.
At the moment, though, PeerTube's live chat highly suffers from bot abuse and the lack of interoperability with #Fediverse. On Owncast, you can identify yourself in chat by logging in via Mastodon, for example, and you can have some guards to prevent spam.
@errhead & @agates - I know you both do things with @peertube … what do you think about @owncast? I frequently see #PeerTube listed as a YouTube alternative and #Owncast as a Twitch alternative. The latter is frequently mentioned as the best live streaming option that’s hooked into the #Fediverse but I see you all using PeerTube for this instead… thus my curiosity.
@owncast@agates can explain the details, but basically I’m interested in #Owncast’s openness to supporting what’s needed so that podcasters can use it for live shows. Currently all the shows that support the <podcast:liveItem> tag are using @peertube. Here I see recommendations for Owncast for its #Fediverse integration so it seems it could also be a good option
I have an account on both misskey and calckey instances and #owncast announcements seem to be formatted in a way that breaks the link to join the channel
then misskey converts it into its own internal representation (misskey-flavoured markdown) without adding any whitespace to mark the ``, so when it converts it again to HTML for presentation, the hashtag and the link get smushed together Reported upstream
Since I'm still new to Federation, I'm looking at different places - Lemmy.world was my first landing place, but I'm checking out kbin.social and this microblog feature.
Always good to try new stuff. Just like sticking to a strict drug regimen - keeps my mind limber.
@NumbersCanBeFun Thanks man, that's really interesting. I am not too aware of the devs anywhere - like a child walking into the middle of everything. LOL
I'm sure I'll stay on #mastodon myself; I dig the news agencies I've gotten connected to like #NPR and #ProPublica.
Hoping to move to a more federated existence online - on my list of things to try is #owncast for my twitch replacement and vids at #tilvids or some #peertube instance.
I wish I had somebody else seriously involved with Owncast. It would be amazing to have somebody to share things with, positive or negative. But there's nobody else in the world who cares, or even understands the nitty gritty day to day that I can talk to. I'm sure there's people who would listen, but nobody would care.
New version of #Owncast so we are having a few small issues with chat. Let me know if you have trouble getting your normal name and/or can't send chat messages.
@owncast When I click to enable or disable the "established users" chat thing it says success but always clicks back to "On".
🎉 Congrats to @gabek and @owncast for launching version version 0.10 this week!
It's a major release with a COMPLETE front-end rewrite 😲, and has been much anticipated by Owncast's fediversal streaming community.
🧪 I'll be testing it with a livestream in about an hour (5/1 at 8pm eastern) at 🎥 @streaming doing some research on fundraising for open source software projects and vibing to some music.
Come hang out, bring a project or snack, and vibe to some 🎶music🎶 with me!
Not once did I say that running Owncast is expensive. The server software itself isn’t costly to run, and doesn’t require much in the way of hardware specs.
I said that video is expensive. Which it typically is, especially compared to text, photos, audio, etc.
Now if @owncast knows of ways to save on the cost of video, I’m sure everyone would like to learn how. Because it’s not just me who’s concerned about the cost of video. It’s a whole lot of people who would be running an Owncast server but haven’t yet.
So tell me how to do it. If I’m streaming all my video games, I’d rather use #Owncast than #Twitch.
@ernie@owncast This right here. This is an opportunity to learn about #Owncast. And when I learn, so does everyone who's following along to this conversation.
Live-streaming can be expensive & easily skyrocket the cost of hosting (depending on the video quality). I currently rely on #Vimeo & #Youtube as I can afford those, but high quality live streaming is sadly beyond my budget.
I’m hearing murmurs of YouTube blocking browsers that support ad blockers.
You know where you don’t have to worry about such things? Host your videos on a #PeerTube instance and use #Owncast for your live video streaming needs.
@owncast I've been on Mastodon since late November last year, and am finally comfortable & confident enough to explore the rest of the #Fediverse. Are there any guides available on #Owncast & #PeerTube suitable for a complete rookie?
setting this up is so far accessible with nvda and the web interface, however I cannot adjust the slider which is stuck at 24fps with nvda. Is there someone I can contact re #accessibility of #owncast?
I will be #streaming#Noita for a little bit, to test out my #Owncast server setup; I think the server it's on needs an upgrade, or I need to bring this in-home.
I might stream, on my #owncast tonight, some Wii gameplay since I found my USB sensor bar.
However I don't feel too good/healthy so this may be unwise.
