no, but it was the most fun to write.

Google provides a tool called PageSpeed Insights which gives a website some metrics to assess how well it is put together and how fast it loads. There are a lot of technical details but in general green scores are good, orange not great and red is bad.

I tried to ensure the tests were similar for each platform by choosing a page that shows a list of posts, like https://mastodon.social/explore.

https://join.piefed.social/?attachment_id=308Mastodonhttps://join.piefed.social/?attachment_id=307Peertubehttps://join.piefed.social/?attachment_id=311Misskeyhttps://join.piefed.social/?attachment_id=309Lemmyhttps://join.piefed.social/?attachment_id=313kbinhttps://join.piefed.social/?attachment_id=315Akkomahttps://join.piefed.social/?attachment_id=310PieFedhttps://join.piefed.social/?attachment_id=314pixelfedhttps://join.piefed.social/?attachment_id=312PleromaPieFed and kbin do very well. pixelfed is pretty good, especially considering the image-heavy nature of the content.

The rest don’t seem to have prioritized performance or chose a software architecture that cannot be made to perform well on these metrics. It will be very interesting to see how that affects the cost of running large instances and the longevity of the platforms. Time will tell.

Shoopdawhoop, update for davbot.media from my host should be pushed to their docker in the next 5 days after they do their update check over. I'd rather it take a little time, and someone with more experience than I, who also admins the host ensures it's a smooth flip first :D

If you need a space to post video, come apply. I get notified for approvals, and check em when I'm not working so the wait isn't too long. Or yell at me here heh.

I've been working on a subtitle editor plugin for !
It adds a extra button on the update video page, and can do most of what you find in other tools, like visualize audio, basic formatting, and makes it easy to switch language.
The goal is that it should be "good enough" for most who just want to add subtitles/captions, but don't want to spend time finding and downloading dedicated software for this.
Instance administrators can install it via the plugin page.

Screen recording of me opening the subtitle editor on a video about accessibility in Copenhagen. I demonstrate visualizing audio, panning, editing text in the english translation, and moving the start of the subtitle text.

Just installed on my Galaxy Tab. So far, everything works great and so much better without all the bloatware. I installed for handwritten notes and I'm happy with it as well.

Are there any apps you'd recommend for tablets?

caos,

@Merula If the question is still relevant:
Especially for tablets / larger screens, NewPipe would of course be important for watching and . Best to add the repo for faster updates
Then perhaps a launcher ?lang=en)that is better suited to tablets and maybe a special keyboard (e.g. Hackers was good for tablets, but is no longer being developed)

: "Providing public services through infrastructures under the control of the public (e.g., through the decentralized approach of the fediverse) would operationalize the idea of building and securing Digital Public Spaces. On paper, policymakers have already embraced this concept, as indicated by the inclusion of a section on “Participation in the Digital Public Space” in the European Declaration on Digital Rights and Principles for the Digital Decade, which was adopted by EU co-legislators in late 2012.

The story of the EU’s Mastodon and Peertube servers is a litmus test for whether EU institutions are truly committed to the idea of a Digital Public Space and to addressing the challenge of a digital space dominated by a few corporations.

For all the talk of “digital sovereignty,” it would be unfortunate (to put it mildly) if the EU proved incapable of running a couple of servers to host a decentralized service and provide an alternative to its X and YouTube social media accounts."

So much more to explore, new projects, new apps:
like Instagram but no ads
like Youtube but not ads
like Facebook but not harvesting your data
like
like Reddit
@MonaApp a new app which costs some money but it’s worth it every penny

They all communicate together, you can use any or all, keep your people, your following circles across all of them.

Please excuse any experiments - I just (re)started this journey. Constructive tips are welcome of course!

Un SSO pour le fédiverse ?

@opensource

SUNDAY SNEAKY STREAM!!!

It's Dwarf Fortress again. We're going to try a volcano start again, but this time in an ancient world (2000 years). This embarkhas tons of tetrahedrite so we'll have plenty of copper and silver. Maybe we can get an obsidian farm going here while we're at it.

I'll also try some experiments with Adventure Mode on this map so we'll see how that works out.

Come join the fun!

EU leaving Fediverse (Mastodon & PeerTube) because no one wants to operate the servers

“In recent years, a total of 40 institutions have opened an account with EU Voice, including the EU Data Protection Supervisor, the European Court of Justice and the EU Commission. The video platform, on the other hand, was used by six institutions … the EU institutions were thus the largest group of public institutions in the Fediverse worldwide.”

I think next time I might not start in the middle of a large project. Needs to be more like Joy of Painting and start with a blank "canvas". Probably just grab a problem from the cyber-dojo and plug at it.

Let me know if the music is too loud or the font to unreadable.

For the open social web to happen at scale, companies big and small need to adopt ActivityPub. Threads is the largest player to do this and the implications are huge.

On the latest episode of Dot Social I ask @rklambo and @pcottle, two thoughtful and genuine leaders on the Threads team, about why they're doing this and whether federation is a feature or foundational. Check it out on #PeerTube or wherever you get your podcasts.
