This take is annoying.

But it's also not entirely @gruber's fault because the media doesn't really talk about the Fediverse, and when they do, it's as a synonym for "Mastodon".

How would @gruber know about the massive development efforts to build more user-friendly alternatives to Mastodon?

No one in the media talks about the growth of *key apps, and how they're now the #2 most used Fediverse platform.

That story isn't being told.

The main reason why I can't move from my current installation to anything else ( , , , or ) is that none of them accept importing an existing backup from a different service into a brand-new account. At most you can migrate your address but not your posts.

Is migration of posts between (or ) instances due to a technical impossibility, or merely lack of willingness to program it?

This doesn't really answer the question *, sure clients will have various monetization models (though WTH is transactions). The issue is what is the server/Bluesky PBLLC business model?

Are they going to start putting ads in the feed? Are they going to charge users or clients for access? Stay free and make it up in volume? I have no clue, not sure anyone does either.

I've been a part of many social media efforts. For example, I helped build and grow Hootsuite.

But nothing compares to what's happening with https://calckey.social (and ) right now.

Right now, the growth is entirely word of mouth.

No advertising, press releases, Silicon Valley-style hype.

But last November, I told @kainoa that this could be a project that changes their life.

I'm honoured to help in whatever way that I can!

Just realized that I'm working on a lot of Fediverse projects:

  1. , a federated audio/video P2P streaming server

  2. , a fully-managed Fediverse hosting service

  3. An "unnamed" federated crowdfunding platform

  4. An "unnamed" onboarding platform for the Fediverse

  5. A local Fediverse server, vancity.social, 's home on the Fediverse

  6. A general server, calckey.social

  7. An art server, calckey.art

  8. Testing of various clients and platforms...

dominick,

@atomicpoet I'd be really interested to hear your thoughts on the advantages/tradeoffs of #calckey, #pleroma, & #mastodon, since you're so involved in all of them. I briefly joined a Pleroma instance (ironically named mastodon.tech) but performance was terrible and I think it had been abandoned.

I'm very glad to announce the release of version 2.27 of , the simple, minimalistic instance server written in ANSI C. It includes some interesting new features (that I announced some days ago):

Started Mastodon API support, so you can use Mastodon-compatible apps to access accounts. What works so far: login, private and public timelines, full post information (replies and ancestors), liking and boosting posts. Things that don't work yet but eventually will: following accounts, posting and replying to messages (I still have to figure out how some things work, like posting images), notifications (needs some internal support), the instance timeline (snac does not have one, but it can be simulated with not much effort) and probably many other things. Things that will never work: bookmarks, pinning, a federated timeline, many other things that I don't remember right now. Please note that if you want to use this API in your instance, you must add some lines to your HTTP proxy configuration, see the snac(8) (administrator documentation) manual page. I'm doing my tests using the (which sometimes crashes, surely my fault), , and Android apps. Success or failure reports will be appreciated.

Fixed some buffer overflows (contributed by Saagar Jha).

Fixed overzealous rejection of some local boosts.

@Kaiteki @caos

I frequently see posts where instance admins are bemoaning Mastodon's lack of a given feature. Many times these are features that other Fedi microblogging systems like Akkoma/Pleroma already implement well.

So why aren't those as popular? Why are folks sticking with Mastodon?

I tried to report to that their social links feature fails to correctly validate handles unless they are hosted on a mastodon, and all I got was a link to their community discussions 🙄.

Since Microsoft is big enough to only care about things when there is enough noise, here is a link where you can upvote / make noise. :nes_fire:

https://github.com/orgs/community/discussions/53537

Until this is addressed, if you happen to be using any other server type (e.g. , , , etc), GitHub will not accept your handle as a fediverse social link.
