But it's also not entirely @gruber's fault because the media doesn't really talk about the Fediverse, and when they do, it's as a synonym for "Mastodon".
How would @gruber know about the massive development efforts to build more user-friendly alternatives to Mastodon?
No one in the media talks about the growth of *key apps, and how they're now the #2 most used Fediverse platform.
The main reason why I can't move from my current #Pleroma installation to anything else ( #Akkoma, #Misskey, #Calckey, #Hubzilla or #Friendica ) is that none of them accept importing an existing backup from a different service into a brand-new account. At most you can migrate your address but not your posts.
This doesn't really answer the question *, sure clients will have various monetization models (though WTH is transactions). The issue is what is the server/Bluesky PBLLC business model?
Are they going to start putting ads in the feed? Are they going to charge users or clients for access? Stay free and make it up in volume? I have no clue, not sure anyone does either.
@atomicpoet I'd be really interested to hear your thoughts on the advantages/tradeoffs of #calckey, #pleroma, & #mastodon, since you're so involved in all of them. I briefly joined a Pleroma instance (ironically named mastodon.tech) but performance was terrible and I think it had been abandoned.
I'm very glad to announce the release of version 2.27 of #snac, the simple, minimalistic #ActivityPub instance server written in ANSI C. It includes some interesting new features (that I announced some days ago):
Started Mastodon API support, so you can use Mastodon-compatible apps to access #snac accounts. What works so far: login, private and public timelines, full post information (replies and ancestors), liking and boosting posts. Things that don't work yet but eventually will: following accounts, posting and replying to messages (I still have to figure out how some things work, like posting images), notifications (needs some internal support), the instance timeline (snac does not have one, but it can be simulated with not much effort) and probably many other things. Things that will never work: bookmarks, pinning, a federated timeline, many other things that I don't remember right now. Please note that if you want to use this API in your instance, you must add some lines to your HTTP proxy configuration, see the snac(8) (administrator documentation) manual page. I'm doing my tests using the #Tusky (which sometimes crashes, surely my fault), #AndStatus, #Fedilab and #Husky Android apps. Success or failure reports will be appreciated.
Fixed some buffer overflows (contributed by Saagar Jha).
I'm pretty sure that the #Fediverse is one of the first social networks I've been on that didn't ever ask me to betray any of the people in my address book.
So, looking at three #Misskey clients on the Mac so far, those being #Kimis#missririca (also on Android) and #Misscat, all of them if running on a Mac using #Voiceover (where Kimis is a Mac exclusive), all three of them have some issue or another at the moment.
As for #Friendica, I'll be over there as well sometime.
When that is, highly unsure at the moment. One thing's definite though, both Friendica and #Pleroma have a way set more of #Blind friendly clients for screen reader use, on all platforms.
Misskey 's new, ain't gonna go hard on them too much. I know someone among the blind community will.
@Kaiteki@caos
Mammoth for Mastodon is now available to download for free on the App Store! 🎉
It has the easiest way to join Mastodon with a great onboarding flow and no need to think about what server to join, it’s full-featured with complete Mastodon feature parity, and fully customizable to tweak it just the way you want and make it yours.
Posted in German this morning, that surely many people are leaving #Mastodon early after signing up because the Web-UI doesn't really look nice.
That's why I would suggest telling every newcomer not only to try out other mobile-apps, but also web-apps like #Elk, #Phanpy, #Trunks and more (see the screenshots). In addition, one could also look at other services in the #Fediverse, I especially like #Calckey.
some servers running alternative softwares that i can endorse:
blaha.zone (Calckey server for LGBTQ+ people and their allies and accomplices)
charcha.cc (possibly running #pleroma server seeming to be aimed at #Indian members )
I frequently see posts where instance admins are bemoaning Mastodon's lack of a given feature. Many times these are features that other Fedi microblogging systems like Akkoma/Pleroma already implement well.
So why aren't those as popular? Why are folks sticking with Mastodon?
A lot of bug fixes and quality of life improvements in this release.
Most notably: fixed real time notification for Mastodon v4 (when the streaming API isn't on the same server), better attachment handling, fixed unmute/unblock functionalities and updated project page.
I tried to report to #GitHub that their social links feature fails to correctly validate #fediverse handles unless they are hosted on a mastodon, and all I got was a link to their community discussions 🙄.
Since Microsoft is big enough to only care about things when there is enough noise, here is a link where you can upvote / make noise. :nes_fire:
Until this is addressed, if you happen to be using any other server type (e.g. #Pleroma, #Akkoma, #Calckey, #Friendica etc), GitHub will not accept your handle as a fediverse social link.
Checkout #Audon. It is a platform for real-time audio streaming that users of #Calckey#Pleroma and #Mastodon can log in in to with their existing accounts.
