A handful of billionaires are tightening their grip on the information ecosystem.
Elon Musk has transformed Twitter into x, a platform that amplifies disinformation, bigotry and conspiracy theories. Musk altered the network's algorithm to promote his fascist propaganda and suppress links from factual, science and reputable Information and other independent outlets.
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has downgraded reliable news and political sites for Information on Facebook and other Meta properties, prioritizing memes and celebrity gossip.
I posted this question to the Nitter Matrix room but figured I'd post it here too: Do we know how Nitter use impacts user and view counts within the Twitter system itself? Like do all these ghost accounts inflate the DAU/MAU and does an instance reading a tweet increase the view count metrics according to Twitter? I use Nitter because I want to view some accounts that didn’t leave Twitter without contributing view counts but if those are still increasing by reading accounts via Nitter I’ll probably end up only using even that only sparingly. I hate the idea of contributing to the Musk machine even in infinitesimal ways. #nitter#twitter#DeleteTwitter#ElonMusk
I'm so sick of seeing advocates for privacy, human rights and the rights of marginalized people criticizing Twitter's many offenses ON TWITTER.
Come on, folks: you're the ones who have the most to lose if Elon successfully executes on his agenda. He very well could be the deciding factor in Trump regaining the White House. What good is calling him out if you're just making his platform stronger?
"Verteidigung gegen Bot-Armeen": Musk will X/Twitter kostenpflichtig machen
Schon jetzt werden kostenpflichtige Accounts auf X bevorzugt. Um Bots zu vertreiben, soll der Dienst aber bald für alle etwas kosten, hat Elon Musk angekündigt.
If you're looking for something to delete all your old tweets, https://redact.dev/ is working well for me so far. Lots of customizability if you need it. There is a premium offering but you can #DeleteTwitter with the free tier (premium just supports deleting from more sites)
I've requested twitter data for my two main #Twitter accounts which I stopped using a year ago.
Once I have the archives I'm going to delete both accounts as this seems to be the only way to delete all my tweets. It says it may take up to 24 hours. We'll see.
The Université #Rennes 2 has decided to stop publishing on X.
“The situation has deteriorated with X’s withdrawal from the EU code of good practice against #misinformation and the recent announcement of the end of the blocking feature, which could encourage various forms of #harassment.
The editorial evolution of this social network, contrary to the values of our school, which has made the fight against #discrimination and #violence a priority, worries us.”
#OrganicMaps is here. Use it while offline and feel good about a #privacy-respecting app that doesn't suck you dry of your personal information. Based on #OpenStreetMap this app is gonna blow #Google#Maps out of the water (hopefully ;)
I'm sick of hearing about Twitter/X too, so this will (probably) be the last time I say anything about that garbage fire (as a main post).
Per this image, it looks like the block feature is being removed. Can you imagine all the awful, vile people you had blocked on there coming back and being able to harass you?
Delete X. It's run and owned by a fascist.
Download your tweets and delete your account if you want to be safe. You can stop using X. It's better here.
Just posted this on the bird site - what is the last straw people need to leave twitter completely? I found my limit. I'm leaving.
For me, paying nazi, misogynistic 'influencers' is too far. I've long been passive on Twitter, but used it to distribute content. I can't do it anymore. The values conflict is too much.
I'd love it if some academics took a stand with me. I'm going to delete my (50K+) follower account on the 13th of August. I'm staying for a month to do a count down and encourage others to #DeleteTwitter.
I don't have a recommendation of where is best to go. Anywhere is better than Twitter and its ocean of hate. Appreciate a boost to build a bit of momentum for this protest attempt
It is now painfully clear that no local government, state or federal agency, or other civic institution should be using Twitter for any purpose other than directing people to alternative platforms.
Using the platform for anything other than a last ditch backup for any kind of emergency communication is clearly a disaster waiting to happen.
