If you update to iOS 16.4 and "add to home screen", that version (called a PWA) will have full notifications and background/offline support!

For those with the PWA already added, you may need to go into Settings> Notifications> and enable push notifications.

If someone's added a web app to their iOS home screen, does anyone know a way to send that person a link which opens in that installed web app, rather than in a browser tab?

Can we make a global effort to kill version hell once and for all?

I want a world where you create software with zero maintenance. Only updates are caused by new insights on how to improve the user experience.

Perhaps the web-app () can deliver on this dream. But I'm weary that browsers will also keep updating API's so a web-app created today won't run 10 years later.

Some talk about here:

https://mastodon.social/@bendelarre/111126758524773053

I have mixed feelings about PWAs. They're the best way to get an app on a user's device right now (no app stores!) but the hoops you have to jump through...

Take the Periodic Background Sync API (https://developer.chrome.com/articles/periodic-background-sync/) which articles will have you believe is a way to keep the data fresh on your app ("fetch latest widgets every hour") as illustrated here:

https://web.dev/app-like-pwas/#background-app-refreshing (by @tomayac)

The problem is...

I've given a chance, but it's simply too far behind in speed and stability.

It regularly becomes unresponsive. Crashes in one tab can lock up other tabs. Chrome had that solved on day one back in 2008.

The lack of proper support is also a deal breaker.

I hate as much as the next , but I can't live like this.

Example of PWA disruption in the EU:

Magenta Musik is an entertainment service -part of the German telecom company - offering information about concerts and festivals. In 2022, Magenta Musik shut down their native apps on both and and replaced them with a single Progressive Web App (PWA).

Oooh, has the node graph functionality, which allows you to compose vector objects from the primitives like fill, stroke, transform and live filters in a visual manner!

Node graph interface and filters both give me this nice break-out I needed after LPEs in . Don't get me wrong: that program is THE legend, developers are masters of vectors, and it's purely native Gtk toolkit on which application is built. Right now, their priority is CMYK support, so follow if you're into printing.

I just love to experiment with shiny new software that's , especially one that uses and to its advantage.

Watch 'em apply circular repeat filter on a mere line to produce this fun sparkle effect. (It is Graphite's official channel, by the way. Wish they were on Mastodon?)

Don't understand why people are so angry about Apple turning off PWAs in iOS.

iDevices are proprietary, closed ecosystems. Apple decides what runs on it and any tech-savvy user buying Apple hardware knew that from the beginning.

"How outrageous they do that!". No, it's not. It's the nature of proprietary software and hardware. But you can change that any time. Vote with your pocket.
