Let your batteries warm up for a while before charging them. Charging a lithium ion battery when it's close to or below freezing will damage it, permanently reducing its capacity.

80-page report on #UK Low Traffic Neighborhoods (LTNs) just released 17.3.24.
Here's what I learned:

UK added 100+ LTNs during COVID

3.7% of #London's population lives in an #LTN

LTNs use signs, planters, bollards, cameras to reduce cut-thru #cars

Most people who live in an LTN don't know it

Emergency responder time stayed the same

58% less #traffic, 50% fewer collisions, cleaner #air

Business owners like LTNs

#Netherlands does a stellar job building community.

Today it's #GlurenBijDeBuren "Peeking at the Neighbors" at 100s of locations in dozens of cities. People invite neighbors to their homes and show off skills.

I could bike to see rock bands, choirs, a palm reader, magician, or cooking class.

But I've chosen homes near me with Klezmer, New Age music, TheaterSports, and a western band promising to sing Dolly Parton. I might head further afield for backgammon class

Big bonus, the Moynihan Train Station has, since June, had a direct connection to the #Highline Park for a nice pre-trip walk.

This is maybe my 15th trip across the US by train. I've enjoyed it every time!

Very well written long article about how the US establishment is moving towards seeing serious injuries and deaths as a public health crisis -- and why people who are distracted and distressed are not people who should be driving cars.

Starting Monday, 29/1/24 motorists in #Edinburgh will be fined £100 for parking on the sidewalk.

The BBC filmed a woman and her guide dog to highlight why parking on sidewalks is problematic.

"The Edinburgh council said pavement parking was a "persistent issue" on 500 streets."

Sidewalk creep is an even bigger problem in cities where cars are ever more bloated and there aren't good #transit and #bike options.

I tested out tons of bikes this weekend at @cargobikefest -- It's exciting how much this industry is evolving.

Three #bikes were outstanding to both pedal and be a passenger in. Two others had noteworthy cargo / logistics innovations.

golo.bike is chainless! It is a very smooth ride, does tight turns, and is fun for both riding in and pedaling -- though it is intended as a freight vehicle. The bike uses a linear hybrid drive system, removing the chains and gearing system and replacing it with just a generator at the crank and motors in the rear hubs.

Doorfietsroutes, thru bike paths, are smoothly aligned regional connectors between cities. Fun for tourists. Essential for #climate adaptation.

Regional #infrastructure requires incredibly hard political and engineering cooperation.

It's so relaxing to bike in the #Netherlands, because, on busy roads, bike traffic is separated, and on city streets I can trust that people who drive are alert and follow the rules (look up presumed liability).

In the US, I wonder if I should make a version of this video for myself in the cities I bike in.

I love getting places by #bicycle: the air, the beauty, using my body to move, interesting things all around me.
