Met the love of my life in 1968 & together ever since, moved to #SFBayArea at 18 for SF State, drafted away by the #AlternateService as a CO, returned in ‘78. Was a #Union biomedical tech until retiring to Reno, NV. Resettled 03/22 in Vallejo. Never used Twitter but thought I’d give social media a go after learning about #Mastodon. Looking to find a local group of #Chess players. Favorite quote - It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and remove all doubt.

How do we get 2 evils here? Biden has changed the course of US history for the good, establishing initiatives fighting climate change (my #1 issue), rebooting manufacturing in America that support organized labor, and standing up for our allies abroad, including his pressure on Netanyahu to prevent a genocide in Gaza which is unappreciated by most of the fools who think he is in charge there. If tfg was POTUS, there would be ten times as many dead Palestinians
Lessor of 2 evils is a false premise

America, we have 11 months to stop a dictator. Don't be fooled by the familiarity of the fool or by any soft-pedaling of the situation. Trump means us excessive harm.

Nobody in the Democratic Party, including Joe Biden, is perfect. We don't need that and we won’t get it. We need people that will stop this march to autocracy, misogyny, racism, and the deletion of our rights.

One chance, people.

Voters must take Trump seriously and literally. The stakes are that high.

If you don’t see the good that Biden has done, you are being intentionally obtuse. He inherited, like Obama, an economy in free fall with record unemployment and inflation. GDP is over 3%, job growth & real earning power are higher than at anytime in tfg’s time in office, inflation is being managed without a recession that hurts the poorest people. My God, man, he walked the picket line with UAW workers, the 1st time a President has done that. His record for protecting minorities is solid. Quit spreading lies about how ineffective he is, b/c he has stood up for my very progressive values more than any POTUS since Carter.

The last line:

“But we've already lost if we roll over and let the criminals run free.”

is what happened in Italy when Mussolini threatened violence and the authorities surrendered without a fight. It’s what can happen anywhere when people of conscience submit to threats.

Holding tfg and extremists responsible will always prove more practical and effective than holding your nose and letting the stink pervade society. Hate and violence are easy, but the tools of cowards in a mob. Hold the leader accountable and the mob will either turn on each other or run for cover.

What are your true opinions and thoughts on marriage?

Just for fun, this is a photo from my wedding day (ignore the reflection of my phone lol) I was all of 21.

CivilityFan,
@CivilityFan@sfba.social avatar

@RickiTarr
Wife and I married at 19, nobody thought it would last. We had very different upbringings, had known each other only 14 months and we were both as clueless as kids generally are. We were afraid her parents might travel up from LA to Berkeley and find out we were living together (out of wedlock!) and so we got married.

Neither of us is the same, growth and change are unavoidable, but we’re still the same person in an undefinable and distinct way & my luck has been to see that same person inside as I have learned to appreciate the person she has grown into being. It has not always been easy, but it has always been worthwhile. There is an inevitable ebb and flow in any relationship, I have been lucky both of us stuck it out during the rough patches.

In August we will celebrate our 55 year wedding anniversary.

In 1968, massive campus protests against the Vietnam war spread to the Democratic national convention in Chicago that year, which became a violent confrontation between protesters and police. The result was the election of Republican Richard Nixon, who enormously escalated the war, including the invasion and mass bombing of Cambodia.

A "2nd civil war" wouldn't be Meal Team Six lining up against the army.

It would be JimBob taking out that immigrant couple on their street or family with the trans kid, that they've been pissed at for years. All it takes is some sign or assurance that they might get away with it.

CivilityFan,

The MAGAts that are so proud of their AR-15’s & think the second amendment right has enabled them to withstand perceived Federal overreach remind me of the Southerners in the beginning of Gone With The Wind, which is a great film for understanding hubris and the belief these folks have of their superiority and lack of humanity.
They think guns will protect them against the Army, but I think that they will more likely be reminded of out how Waco turned out, though not until tens of thousand die in the streets. The only hope I hold is if this next election is decided by an overwhelmingly Democratic majority. Which is why third party candidates are so dangerous

There are techniques to battle misinformation & lies that don’t require eliminating free speech, though admittedly it’s difficult to thread that needle. Dominion made Fox pay for the big lie, & I believe Jack Smith will make tfg pay as well, but justice delayed isn’t just justice denied, it propagates exponentially, so I do believe the threat from intentionally deceiving the public needs some very strong remedy. Money damages are a powerful deterrent, but imo challenging a broadcasters license should be on the table for the destruction of democracy that the Fox network has wrought

Since he was elected, income inequality stopped getting narrower and began its current trajectory with poverty increasing and the hollowing out of the middle class. It’s another sweeping assault on the rights and dignity of transgender people in Florida by Republicans. Acts like this want to deny their existence. Ron DeSantis is particularly hateful.

Hopefully, it gets overruled in court. We should all care about this. Everyone’s rights are connected.

@cynblogger @TonyStark Well, I think that making it illegal to be trans is the goal. It’s how the Nazi playbook works, or it did in the 1930’s. Jews couldn’t work in certain jobs, had to stay restricted to certain areas and had to wear identifying patches on their clothes. Then they are easy to spot, round up and dispose of, like trash. That’s how you eliminate empathy for a population, bit by bit diminish their rights until the majority see them as other instead of seeing a shared humanity.

My sentiments exactly, I’m for non violence and finding a peaceful solution to problems, but unchecked aggression cannot be resolved by compromise. Chamberlain wanted to promise the British “peace in our time” by giving in to Hitler. It didn’t turn out well for him, and if Ukraine falls, it will end up being US troops on the ground in Europe again.

Had to laugh at that line about “Women in leadership create chaos”

Just the recent history of the House, where Nancy Pelosi ran a tight ship that secured Biden’s agenda passed through the previous Congress, and this Congress whose Speaker couldn’t get our bills paid or budget passed without help from the opposition, then got fired and a new guy who is unable to support our allies without being threatened by his own rw extremists.

How much chaos when led by a women versus two men? Lmfao.

Russian President Vladimir Putin's appointment of a new defense minister, Andrey Belousov, is seen as an attempt to streamline Russia's economy and mobilize it for the war effort.

Russia's military has faced numerous supply and logistics problems that thwarted its all-out war against Ukraine from the get-go. Two years later, the problems of poor logistics and lack of strategic planning persist.

Plausible deniability. A bit like Putin with his nukes, putting them on the table, results in action in kind. It was the sheer size of their clout and reach that would come to dominate by sucking all the oxygen from the room.
