@samhainnight @TonyStark I’m so disappointed that the Biden administration hasn’t come up with something like a wide-reaching “10-Position Platform” where they describe how they’ll 1) un-ban abortion, 2) ban assault rifles, 3) commit to serious carbon reduction, 4) make public colleges tuition-free, 5) expand SCOTUS, 6) ban gerrymandering, 7) reinstate full voting rights, etc, IF THE VOTERS WILL RE-ELECT HIM AND GIVE HIM A MAJORITY-DEMOCRATIC CONGRESS.

If you've ever found yourself missing the "good old days" of the , what is it that you miss? (Interpret "it" broadly: specific websites? types of activities? feelings? etc.) And approximately when were those good old days?

No wrong answers — I'm working on an article and wanted to get some outside thoughts.

Kimota94,
@Kimota94@mas.to avatar

@molly0xfff I miss the feeling, misplaced or otherwise, that the Web had no ulterior motive behind it. It wasn’t there to collect information on you, to sell you something every 2 seconds, to control what you think or even to make you feel good or bad about yourself. It was just an information superhighway that you could race (or cruise) along however you wanted to.

A few extra seconds of your time it takes to add a good image description can really improve someone's day.

"To a totally blind person like me it means a lot to have a picture in my mind of your images, especially the animal pics."

"I don't know what it is, but as a blind user it's making me emotional to be able to actually interact with content."

@alttexthalloffame My much older brother tells the story, from his childhood in the 1950s, of my mother driving the car through the countryside and narrating what she saw so that her blind (from diabetes) husband could enjoy the view. My brother would lie down on the back seat, close his eyes and see the world the way his father saw it.

I think of that every time there’s a request here to include ALT text descriptions on Mastodon. It’s such a small ask with such a huge upside.

🚨BREAKING: Arizona Grand Jury INDICTS more than a dozen people, including fake electors, for conspiracy, fraud and forgery. Donald Trump named unindicted coconspirator.

Kimota94,
@Kimota94@mas.to avatar

@marcelias A quick reminder that it’s literally impossible to steal votes with voting machines that produce paper ballots, like the ones used in all 7 swing states in 2020. Why? Because you can do hand recounts and compare those totals to the vote tallies reported by the machines. Unless Trump voters were stupid enough to, en masse, fail to notice that their Trump vote was changed to Biden on their paper ballot, then their vote wasn’t changed… as proven by the hand recounts.

I've been very fortunate to find myself in a nice career.

I know many people who haven’t had the same path and the weight of student loans is financially drowning them. I'm truly happy that this will do something to give back to people who put so much in, but can’t break out from underneath the system.

This kind of policy won’t be coming from Republicans. Joe Biden has my vote.

150,000 more student loan borrowers to receive debt relief beginning Wednesday:

@TonyStark As someone who paid off his own student debt back in the 80s, I say, Good on you, President Biden! A healthy society wouldn’t require its citizens to amass debt in order to enhance their skills and become more valuable to that society. Like healthcare, education shouldn’t be a for-profit business. It should be considered an essential service, and something that everyone is entitled to.

“Joe Biden just cancelled $1.2 billion in student debt for those on the REPAYE / SAVE plan

“…here’s how that’s bad for Biden”

Reading comments online you’d think Biden woke up and kicked a baby into a wood chipper

“My debt wasn’t forgiven so it’s a broken promise!! and they got my latte order wrong so I’m not voting REEEEEEE!”

I paid mine off. I’m glad for those who have theirs forgiven

And I’m voting for Biden for the greater good.

🇺🇸

Kimota94,
@Kimota94@mas.to avatar

@flexghost A healthy society would logically want to maximize the number of its citizens who are both in good health (fitter) and well educated (more productive). A sick society instead makes healthcare and higher education for-profit, artificially limiting the number of citizens who can realize their potential. This ain’t quantum physics.

    Troll/reply guy tried to get me to back down from my unequivocal statement that there's no evidence the 2020 election was stolen, claiming it's better to "meet people halfway" if I want to convince them.

    No. As a researcher and educator, I believe in providing clear, accurate information.

    The "evidence" that the election was stolen is made up bullshit. To call it anything else is a disservice.

    If someone claims that 2+2=5, I'm not going to try to get them to compromise that it's 4.5.

    Kimota94,
    @Kimota94@mas.to avatar

    @mattblaze Especially egregious is the “voting machines stole votes from Trump” argument, because the swing states all had machines that produced paper ballots and all did hand recounts. Even a troll can’t explain how machines can steal votes under those conditions on account of it being literally impossible, since the machine has to either print the stolen vote on the ballot, which the voter would notice, or not print it there, which the hand recount would uncover.

    Bringing the news of the day to the masses was once an almost exclusively male profession. Today, it is rare to find any television or print newsroom without female journalists.

    Despite their decades long presence in the field, female journalists find themselves the targets of sexist and misogynistic attacks. The issue is so prevalent that the United Nations sponsored a study on the safety of female journalists.

    The abuse female journalists face for simply doing their jobs is our focus today on . Read more here: https://thinkbigpicture.substack.com/p/female-journalists-online-harassment-threats

    @georgetakei One of the many, many things I learned about Eleanor Roosevelt in Doris Kearns Goodwin’s biography, No Ordinary Time, was that ER set up regular First Lady Press Conferences and only allowed female reporters to attend. The result of this was that many newspapers hired their first women journalists in order to gain access to the sessions, dramatically increasing the representation of women within the profession. We might never have gotten Lois Lane otherwise.

    Born in 1906, computer scientist Grace Hopper invented the first compiler for computer programming language & was among the first programmers of the Harvard Mk1 computer.

    Hopper popularized the idea of machine-independent programming languages & paved the way to develop COBOL (an early high-level programming language). She originated the term "bug" to describe computer glitches & became a celebrated Rear Admiral in the US Navy.

    @Sheril COBOL never gets enough love for how good it was for certain applications. Some of Canada’s biggest banking systems were coded in COBOL for decades and were ridiculously reliable at a time when computer software was known for how often it crashed and how hard it could sometimes be to debug.
