I know $12 USD is a lot of money for some people, so to celebrate 1000+ sales (!!!), I'm giving away 1000 PDF copies of How Git Works (honour system: only if $12 is a lot for you!)

Here's the link, enter code BUYONEGIVEONE at checkout to get a free copy https://wizardzines.com/zines/git/

(it'll ask you for a billing address but you can enter a fake address if you'd prefer)

This "three meetings at once" ad is a great example of how businesses will take tech and use it mostly to spend more time on pointless meetings and busywork instead of using it to, like, accomplish things.

If I had to start a new series of tech books, I would call it "Shattering your dreams about X".

This would be books about the hard realities of doing X for when you realize all the hard topics of operating X on a daily basis are not covered by the "it's going to be sooooo easy" official docs.

Like:

  • "Shattering your dreams about k8s",
  • "Shattering your dreams about GitOps",
  • "Shattering your dreams about the self-organized team",
  • etc.

me: hmm let’s have a look, which library should i use?

library A: it’s 1c1h. one c file, one header file

library B: to build this repo you need to install GluoOn, a fork of MoonOn, a build system based on the Ploob ecosystem. Edit the Ploob intermediates for your platform and include them in the XJAMELLE files. XJAMELLE is a post-Turing-complete configuration solution based on JSON, YAML and XML. To get familiar with the language, i recommend these books: note that these are affiliate links,

Considering the way mothers are treated in this shithole country, I'm outraged to see all this bullshit celebration of mothers this one stupid day per year.

Give us control of our reproductive system, safety from abusers, equal pay and maternity leave, for starters.

No? Too extreme?
Then fuck off.

looking forward to @mwl's book "Run Your Own Mail Server" coming out https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/mwlucas/run-your-own-mail-server

I'm much too afraid to run my own mail server but I've always enjoyed his writing about networking (his “networking for system administrators” helped me a ton when I read it) and I think it's going to be a nice way for me to learn more about how email works

just backed @mwl's “Run Your Own Mail Server" kickstarter https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/mwlucas/run-your-own-mail-server

I'm way too lazy to run my own email infrastructure (I don't even run my own webservers!) but I'm looking forward to learning about what's involved in running an email server anyway

Cisco says it's tracking a large-scale brute-forcing campaign that is targeting VPN devices from multiple vendors.

The campaign started on March 18 and has targeted VPN web panels and SSH endpoints.

Cisco says most attacks originate from Tor exit nodes and other anonymizing tunnels and proxies.

The attacks have targeted VPN devices from Cisco, Fortinet, Check Point, SonicWall, Mikrotik, Draytek, Ubiquiti, and RD Web Services.

SwiftUI -> Swift Concurrency -> SwiftData kind of buried my perennial WWDC enthusiasm under an avalanche of reality. After the last four years, my hands are full of technologies that I eagerly anticipated but are tiring or impossible to hold right. This is the first year I don’t feel guilty for not being excited and that’s progress for me.

kyle,
@kyle@mister.computer avatar

I have more confidence in Apple than anyone else that they can get these new technologies right in the long-term. But SwiftUI debuted in 2019 and my career – at best – has 6 more 5-year spans in it. It is crucial to reflect on the ROI from the attention I have paid to this space for the last 5 years and the outcome is not good. These technologies have not allowed me to be build better, safer, and more performant software: they have encouraged me to sacrifice those tenets for time to market.

@dangerzone is an open source app that uses container sandboxes to create a "virtual photocopy" of a document.

This is to protect journalists and others from malware & trackers that might be implanted in documents sent to them by someone pretending to be a confidential source.

We (@freedomofpress) are hiring a software developer on a 6 month contract to work on the project. Remote, $70/hour, >=3 years of Python dev experience.

EMSIsoft are the first major security vendor to call for a ban on ransomware payments.

Like other security vendors, a portion of their revenue comes from ransomware (they're also the source of many of the decrypters) - so for a business to say 'hey guys... this is spinning out of control', people should probably listen.
