    @Mojeek love the nod to contextual ads

    Pinterest is ALWAYS getting me into pre click mode with their ads because.

    dun dun dun

    They are for the stuff I am actually looking at!

    Normally if you target an ad at me, I hate you, and will actively avoid your product out of spite.

    "Tricking" me by having relevant ads beside my intentionally searched results is fine, though.

    I’m very sympathetic to criticism that many of Apple’s policies around the App Store and some of its products are anti-user and anti-developer. Some of them absolutely are. I’m not convinced that that’s something that should be illegal. Otherwise, please explain the existence of Nintendo.

    maxthyme,
    @maxthyme@mastodon.social avatar

    @film_girl Nintendo doesn't have a stranglehold on a huge number of users which it can abuse at will due to heavy costs incurred if they wish to leave that ecosystem or even interoperate with others outside of it.

    Nobody needs a Switch, you kinda need a phone to operate in the modern world though.

    Invented Narratives and the Outrage Industry

    Despite the unanimity of the justices, I disagree with the Supreme Court’s judgment that states may not enforce section 3 of the 14th A. That judgment is the bottom line. But far more dangerous is the majority opinion, which includes discussion that goes beyond this bottom line. Five justices have tried to prospectively prescribe two requirements irrelevant to the Colorado case. First, they claim that only Congress, not the judiciary or executive branch may enforce section 3. 1/

    maxthyme,
    @maxthyme@mastodon.social avatar

    @heidilifeldman People should appreciate that this also killed all the efforts to get red states to keep Biden off their ballots.

    This is the patchwork problem they were trying to prevent: blue states pulling Trump in part and red states pulling Biden in part.

    Reddit is going public via the IPO route. Last year, the CEO got $193 million, but moderators are not paid and expected to work free past IPO. Only some moderators and active users in the USA can apply for Reddit's initial public offering to buy stock at a special price. Most Reddit users are motivated by fake karma points and likes. Also, they banned all unofficial Reddit mobile clients. Meanwhile, the CEO profits while everyone provides free labor.
