With all of the horrible things happening in the world, it’s nice to find the wins. Especially in the area of our environment. A group called Coral Guardian is restoring coral reefs, and it’s quite magnificent.
These photos represent 7 years of work on the Indonesia’s Hatamin Island. In this they have increased the fish population by 5x with 53k corals restored.
I'm posting this graph by Eliot Jacobson here because I think it's truly remarkable how strong this outlier is growing to be.
It means that #sea temperatures are extremely unusually higher than normal, and the departure from the historical record is almost off the charts. #climatechange#heat
The effects? I couldn't tell you, but I do get the idea that it won't be very pleasant
A look underneath seafloor hydrothermal vents on 🌎has revealed cave systems teeming w/ worms, snails & chemosynthetic bacteria living in 75F-degree water.
Methinks this may have significance for the origin of life on Earth & maybe Enceladus!
🌊 Miniature octopuses, scuba tanks, life rafts, flippers, sharks and some very rare green dragons are still washing ashore along the Cornwall coast today, 25 years after a container of Lego was washed off the deck of a cargo ship.
This is Bøsdalafossur waterfall, the outlet from Sørvágsvatn lake in the Faroe Islands.
The lake sits 40m above sea level, surrounded by cliffs that hem it in, and looks for all the world like it's warped spacetime to inhabit this position.
When we hear that #2023 is the hottest year ever, it is hard to understand the extent. Maybe it is only just a little bit hotter? Unfortunately no. I am back from a symposium on marine environment at Tohoku University, and here is the picture that I saw. Regarding #sea surface #temperature, 2023 is hotter to an extent that was never observed since we monitor that temperature globally. https://climate.copernicus.eu/record-high-global-sea-surface-temperatures-continue-august
Science/coastal hivemind, I need your help. We’re working on the underwater acoustics of small all-electric boats (almost certainly far less underwater noise pollution than engines). We would like to do some trials - just measuring the sound near an electric boat - but we’re struggling to find someone in (or very near) the UK who has an electric boat we could use/hire. Has anyone got any ideas or know anyone who owns an electric boat?

Greenland’s famed ice sheet may be more sensitive to human-caused climate change than previously thought, with irreversible melting likely over the coming centuries, an in-depth study has found. The entire world would be left vulnerable with the rise in sea levels brought on by the ice melting, researchers warned.
Bucharest hopes that around 60% of Ukrainian grain exports could transit through Romanian territory following Russia's unilateral termination of the grain deal, the country's Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu said on Aug. 18, Reuters reported.
70 years ago in 1953, The US #Atomic#Energy Commission published Energy in the Future where they argued that burning #fossil#fuel releases CO₂, which affects #climate & #sea#level.
They pointed out that temperature had been increasing, #glaciers were retreating, and sea level was rising, and speculated that it was due to rising atmospheric CO₂ from land use change and fossil fuel burning!
Ukraine has submitted an official proposal to Turkey to restore a corridor in the Black Sea for Ukrainian grain exports without Russia's participation, Ukrainian Ambassador to Turkey Vasyl Bodnar said on Sept. 7.
Photographed these two kids taking a moment out of playing on the beach to stare out at the vast expanse of ocean, seemingly in wonderment and awe. I’d like to know what their thoughts were as they took it all in.
