No way! A European Citizens' Initiative to (1) tax millionaires to (2) finance a Green New Deal via EU Commission own funds, and (3) whose proponents are (check notes) the president of the Belgian Socialist Party, a Polish former Employment and Social Inclusion Commissioner and Thomas Piketty (@pikettylemonde), possibly the world's most prominent scholar of inequality.
It's technically well done, with indication of its legal grounding in the Treaty and of the regulations to be amended.
Working definition of "millionaires" to vary from country to country. For Belgium: someone that has, on top of their home and business, > 1.25 million EUR in assets.
I predict this one will clear the one million target, and then the Parliament will have to look into it. Good stub for another GND near-future science fiction novella by @pluralistic. Watch this space.
Does Desalination alter the overall chemistry balance of sea water? If there is too many desalination plants around the world what will be the effect of removing all these salts from the seawater (on the basis it is more than just NaCl) what happens to the removed salts?
Also viel besser als Pirna.
I do not often plug things. One, I suck at it, two, most things are perfectly good at plugging themselves. For this site, I am making an exception.
We all know that there is a lot of horrible stuff going on in the world. And we do need to be informed about it so we can do something about it.
But what about the stuff that has had things done about it? We hardly ever hear about that.
A few years ago, David Bryne - ex-frontman of Talking Heads, and all-round nice guy, noticed this problem, and started a news site that focuses on solutions from around the world.
my favourite #goodNews story of the week cos it involves #otters :awesome: :blobheartraccoon:
"A great example of how saving one #species can have a domino effect on the restoration of a whole #ecosystem. In California’s Monterey Bay, efforts to bolster sea otter populations are saving local salt marshes because the otters feast on the burrowing crabs that cause erosion. The sea otters have consumed enough of the crabs to slow the #erosion almost to a halt."
Whereas “other clean”, including hydro and #nuclear, produced even more than wind and solar, but Ember is in the solar and wind business so they don’t highlight it much, and don’t even mention it in the article. The problem clearly visible here is that while coal and gas are low this year, they will not be replaced by renewables in countries such as Germany which was forced to open new coal plants to compensate for closure of its nuclear. If they haven’t done that, fossil fuels have been in the dark past long ago.
If you're fed up with all the unbalanced bad news we're constantly exposed to if you go onto the mainstream media, I've found there is a #GoodNews hashtag that I'm now using and following on my #Home feed to increase my mental wellbeing so I see more heartwarming stuff about the communities around the world and what they do for each other.
I like the idea of knowing how much people care about each other, and the people that do things simply because they can. The vast majority of us just quietly get on with being good people, in our own little ways.

Schadenfreude of the Week - A protest against Primark's Pride campaign turned out to be two people and one flag. The counter protest outnumbered them a hundred to one. “Thanks transphobes, you created a more cohesive community, made money for local charities who support trans kids, made everyone aware of the amazing safe spaces in local businesses and started a party! You achieved all that.”
BREAKING: in fantastic news for life everywhere, the EU Nature Restoration Law was passed this morning.
Restoring the natural systems on which we live is the only logical action to take for anyone who wants human civilisation to continue. It’s also the logical option for the economy:
“The European Commission estimates that restoring natural environments would generate around €1,860 billion, at an estimated cost of just €154 billion.”
The protesting farmers and all the centre-right (EPP) and right wing parties that voted against this can go get fucking lost. Such idiotic short-sightedness.
From the EPP: “We do not want new and more forms of bureaucracy and reporting obligations for farmers”.
Well the farmers won’t have anything to report on if there are no fucking insects left, will they now? Fucking morons.
Please don’t vote for these imbeciles in the upcoming EU elections, vote green/left.
