#Mastodon has indeed experienced growth in the past few months due to the missteps of #Twitter and the upcoming rebranding exercise is no different. Mastodon is seeing active user growth to 2.1M users.
One needs to keep in mind that Mastodon is not the only microblogging server available on #fediverse, alternatives such as #Akkoma & #Firefish are also gaining popularity & not reported in those numbers.
one disadvantage with activitypub is that accounts are not fully portable. what does migration mean in this chart? user posts, account details, medias can all be moved between software?
Back on the #mstdnca server as life has taken me in another direction. Loved the freedom of managing my own instance and the #Akkoma software has been great but not much time to #sysadmin my own instance these days. Tuxz.one will still stick around but won't be my main instance, might play with other #fediverse software on it.
"Don't waste time in the Fediverse", they say.
"It's complicated and people don't interact", they say.
"It's scattered and you'll never get good engagement on your posts", they say.
"Pay Twitter #blue, you'll have more visibility", they say.
"Without an algorithm, nobody will notice your posts", they say.
Well, I say they're wrong! 😄
(check the images - and I've more followers on Twitter than on Mastodon)
Does anyone know if posts from Pleroma/Akkoma can be embedded?
This closed issue from three years ago suggests this should be possible, but I can't seem to get this to work. Unless this is not typically enabled on instances?
It's great to see so many new people joining various services.
Let's talk about some terminology to help you -- don't worry, we will keep it simple.
The #fediverse is a word used a lot. Basically, it is a way for lots of social servers to talk to each other and share posts. Like email, we are all on different email servers, but they all communicate.
When you join the fediverse, you pick a server to join. Some servers cater for niche topics. Don't worry, they still talk with the fediverse, but it means your server has people with the same interests as you. Other servers are more general.
There are various server types. Here are a few examples:
#Mastodon -- very popular; similar to Twitter. You can post messages, attach images, reply, like, share (called boosting)
#Calckey -- similar to Mastodon, but has some extra features (example, text formatting)
#Akkoma and #Misskey are also similar to Twitter but more niche
#Pixelfed is a phenomenal alternative to #Instagram. You will feel very at home there.
Importantly, all these servers talk to each other. So, if you are using Mastodon you can follow someone on Pixelfed and Lemmy and Calckey, all from your one account -- and interact with them too. How great is that?
There are NO computer algorithms in the fediverse to force content on to you. You only see posts from people you follow. So follow lots of people; you can unfollow later.
Do an #introduction post to let people know about you. Use the hashtag '#introduction' to allow others to browse collective posts and maybe follow you.
You will see I have used the # a lot here. Hashtags help others find similar posts. Use them for key topics in your post.
Don't be afraid to ask for help if you are not sure.
So… welcome to new users in the #Fediverse network!
If you are exploring the fediverse through the #Mastodon software, feel free to explore other platforms like #Streams#Calckey#Hubzilla#Friendica#Akkoma to mention a few, for your usual “status updates” (and more) UI/UX.
If you want a platform more focused on photos and images, then there is #Pixelfed. Or, you want bookshelves and tracking what you've read, or leaving #book reviews, there is #BookWyrm.
But the beauty of it all, all of these are connected to the fediverse. You can follow any user regardless of which software they are using; AND regardless which server (domain name) they signed-up for.
The latest version of #Lemmy (0.18.x) being so broken, that I can only reply to posts using #Pleroma / #Akkoma but not Lemmy, is something I frankly didn’t expect. Hopefully the #Kbin packaging for #YunoHost is working soon
#Misskey vs #Akkoma interface on Misskey is cleaner but I'm worried some off the issues I had on Calckey might also be here. Last thing I want is to start a new instance and have no #PhilCollins, that's not how I roll.
Thank you for your patients with the repeated adds!
I really like the fact that #Calckey shows a link preview for every link in the post, not just the first one that's discovered. #Akkoma should adopt this.
I would be very interested in knowing if there are #fediverse projects other than #mastodon that will be committed to keeping a pure Fediverse, #activityPub spec and compatibility THAT IS NOT lead or even influenced by #meta ...
I fear that our BENEVOLENT Dictator may succumb to the dark side quite quickly:(
Hey, folks who have used both, how does #Akkoma compare to like #Calckey (or other *keys) for you?
I’ve used vanilla Mastodon, Mastodon Glitch Edition, and I mostly use Akkoma. I’ve never experienced any of the *keys but I hear Calckey is popular and have some mutuals on instances running that.
Like what are some major positives or negatives with your experiences? How do they compare for you?
I’m not really looking to make another account rn but I was wondering about the differences.
I had a look at Fediverse profiles via #kbin and #lemmy. I like how e.g. kbin presents posts and replies with indentation. 👍
(For those new, you can use the kbin/lemmy web interfaces to look at any #Fediverse account.)
Generally, when one post can have replies and replies can have replies, we end up with a tree-structure. Was there any attempt to visualise this on #Mastodon's web interface? I think #Pleroma/#Akkoma does that.
Maybe it's time for me to look for alternative interfaces, finally.
Having second thoughts about my self-hosted #Mastodon instance, it’s just too much of a resource hog for a single user / small instance on a 4 core / 4G vServer if you want to run other stuff (#writefreely is live, #pixelfed to be installed!) as well. On the other hand it is very nice that the software is stable, reliable and well designed. So either I need to move to a bigger server or decommission my self-hosted profile and look into other options for micro / macro blogging self-hosting again. I did like #gotosocial but the current version doesn’t install on my #yunohost properly. Tried #Akkoma and #Pleroma - weren’t my thing, can’t get over the design. I do like #Friendica and its possibilities but it is a bit clunky at times and I have some doubts if protocols other than the quasi standard #ActivityPub have much of a main stream future which kinda could make the additional Friendica features a little islandish. Same applies to #Hubzilla which I only start testing. Leaves #Misskey and #Calckey which could be good options but not sure about the reliability and gameplan there, I don’t want to tinker every night on my server so #Calckey probably need to become a little more stable first, #Misskey seems to have no current version on YunoHost, so need to explore other install options… Any thoughts very welcome! @fediversenews@fediversede
