2 weeks ago I had no idea how to host a #Mastodon
Today I have 14 services running on my own domain, with admin panel, backups, monitoring, email, SSO (so good to have the same user across all the services!)
I still need to do some tweaks to the services, but for a single user all running well.
As I am using 2 VPS the total cost is € 9,50/month + a donation of 5€ to :yunohost: project.
I could run everything on my own home, maybe I will do that in the future.
A lot of people have talked about the possibility of forking #Mastodon to get the many improvements their communities need. Making such an effort successful is another discussion entirely.
Ser att Bluesky vunnit viss popularitet bland Mastodon-användare, det är förbryllande, Mastodon (ActivityPub) är den fria plattformen, de flesta andra är inlåsning.
It would be nice if there where a way to turn off animated avatars here, perhaps there is?
I find them distracting and frankly pretentious.
One option would be muting I suppose. #Mastodon
Please, help us out by signing up and boosting on #mastodon. It's the only way we can keep @murmel_social's sustainable future.
Hint: If you've tried Murmel in the past and it was too expensive for you, now's the perfect time to sign up again. You'll get the reduced price right away!
@mgs This is why ActivityPub would be great, if Threads really embraced it.
There is high likelihood you will get your account back, because you are in the know. But for regular whom this happens there is no chance. It's much more likely that if I get a problem with the account I can contact @leo via Discord etc. rather than say someone at Meta.
When one person clogs up a #hashtag I follow so completely, that no matter how long I #doomscroll, all I see is that one person's posts, one after the other, seemingly forever. Aaarrgghhh!!
I would love to see more accounts about #Compost on the fediverse.
Compost is a fantastic tool that can help us balance the #ClimateChange. The more we talk about it, the more we can inspire people to start this wonderful habit.
Our habits make us, and talking about positive habits is a good thing in the toxic environment social media can be.
I would be honored if we had a community of accounts that talk about it, and you can be sure that you will be boosted, and followed and not feel like #Mastodon is a void.
Thanks to Tusks by @bardi, I have decided to experiment a #MegaThread. Over time, I will compile great #Mastodon tools, apps, and services in a single, long thread.
I will update the Mega Thread every time I find a new tool that I find worth mentionning, either third-party or first-party.
For the first post, I want to showcase… Tusks, obviously! It’s an excellent app for macOS, iOS, and iPad to compose and update threads.
Another asshole on mastodon who got mad about my post about German police attacking a man carrying Jews against genocide.
Supporting police brutality against those protesting against ongoing genocide while crying over lack of free speech for those denying the Holocaust is the lowest I have seen.
Extreme right and so called liberals seems to be united in their fight against Palestinian protesters (as always).
I'm glad to announce the release of version 2.52 of #snac, the simple, minimalistic #ActivityPub instance server written in C. It includes the following changes:
Posts that were liked or boosted can now be unliked and unboosted.
Outgoing message timeouts are no longer hardcoded and can be configured (see snac(8) for more information).
Fixed a bug that caused some incorrect unfollows under special conditions (with shared inboxes enabled and users from the same instance that follow each other, the internal message distributor was confused).
Mastodon API: Added support for lists.
Added a header to avoid over-zealous caching in some browsers (contributed by louis77).
Added support for running and federating inside hidden networks like Tor, I2P or Loki (contributed by iwojima).
Fixed an error processing polls coming from Pleroma instances.
