After a thorough inside and outside audit with my thermal camera (FLIR), things look pretty good for my thermal envelope. (did not check the attic, however). Interestingly enough, the most obvious heat loss (aside from a wall panel and roof area missing insulation) is along the bottom of the building slab.

Idk how the fuck were supposed to manage that, but we have to do our best to keep him off our ass or he’ll give us another eviction notice. 😭

On housing:

If a house was for sale and two equal (say, within 5%) offers came in, what if the seller was required to accept the bid from someone who would live in the house, rather than rent it to someone?

[Assume this was enforcable]

There a flaw in this logic? Good idea? Dumb idea? 🤔

Perhaps an unpopular statement, but not everyone who owns a house in is rich. There are a good number of “house poor” people who while they may own a house, are living on a fixed income, are an elderly senior etc. and can’t maintain the property. I’ll bet there are ways to integrate the house poor into housing solutions (more multi-generational housing, downsizing on place, allowing city-subsidized micro-housing units in back yards etc.). 1/2

Everyone: you must be really intimidated by the idea of home ownership in San Francisco

Me: (a photo of public housing in Singapore going for US$1 million.. that you don’t own after 49 years)

(You only own public housing for up to 99 years from the time it was built, so if you buy one that’s 40 years old you’ve got 59 more years. Apartments in very central areas can cost close to a million USD. And privately owned condos cost more, and non apartment homes cost multiple millions)

Some good news on the housing front. A multi -sector plan that is comprehensive, innovation, smart. I am feeling more hopeful than I have in a long time.

I wonder if we're doing wrong? In almost all countries.

Can be difficult not to under estimate the help one has received in life, & to over estimate self reliance & personal input

Isn't that the root of much selfish behaviour, thinking, voting, politics:
believing "I made it on my own"?

Maybe we should positively & nostalgically but clear eyed remind people of all & they got as children, /job market security, etc their parents had access to

Last year the trailer park inspector came by and individually cited and scared tenants instead of citing the park for its violations.

I went to my state assemblymember's office about a culture of acting HOA-like to tenants while letting slumlords off scott-free. They did nothing.

Now I see this, which should be good news for the tenants, but actually scares me into thinking I'm going to get an eviction.

This is what the trailer-emptying of another trailer pad was about, I think.

My spouse worked for a short-term rental company, an competitor, and wow did I hear an earful from them about the kinds of chaos these places can cause. One factor driving away the individual homeowner posting their extra 'crash space' online vs. the massive conglomerates is how little help the companies offer when something goes wrong (i.e. a renter sets off fireworks in your house while you're renting it out). Giant property owners can eat those kinds of losses and don't have sentimental attachment to their homes.
