“The extreme conditions will follow the driest March in 20 years in some areas which has increased growing concerns about the nation's water reserves and officially placed Spain into long-term .

Reservoirs are around 15% below average levels with some shrinking to just 26% of capacity, while the dry conditions are raising fears about the outbreak of more wildfires with summer approaching.” https://news.sky.com/story/spain-braced-for-record-breaking-april-temperatures-of-40c-12865085

@dasgrueneblatt From my perspective as a , this is a typical statistics article. People can't imagine numbers in concrete terms, they don't relate it to their lives. Stories like this should be told using examples, such as the popular tomato from Spain. When I write about forest fires, hectares are of no use, I should write about all that dies, all that is lost. Journalists have to become more descriptive, vivid, and concrete!

Hello out there!

During the five months ago I joined Mastodon and now with the surge going on, I'd thought I’d check out what this side of the is all about.

I’m also a recent dad and an avid , and general lover of anything to do with .

I used to tweet a lot, mainly about news in , , , and especially about COVID-19 during the first two years of the pandemic. But I quit Twitter in December 2022 because it just became too much.

If you're a you're probably aware of also known as , one of the most assinine and useless "resources" out there.

They subscribe me and my employees to every email list known and it's impossible to opt out. I finally contacted their privacy department to remove ex-employee addresses. Here's their response:
"we respect everyone's privacy and consent. Due to GDPR, we cannot make changes to anyone's profile without their consent."

This is insane!

Realised I haven't done an post. So I guess this will be it.

I'm a middle aged human male (mostly, I think) residing on a somewhat disgracefully warming rock spinning through space. Oh, you wanted specifics? Very well.

I'm also a multi-award winning Australian tech journo, ex editor of most of the good tech publications you've probably heard of, currently a freelancer and always on the hunt for work.

I also do a podcast called Vertical Hold: Behind The Tech News -- look it up and subscribe!

In my leisure time I'm keen on retrogaming, Godzilla, coffee, terrible jokes, the music of Prince, Weird Al and Howard Jones, professional wrestling and cats. I write short fiction in my spare time, and I'm trying to learn Japanese, though I'm pretty awful at it.
