Thirty years in, World Press Freedom Day offers little to celebrate
But there seems little to celebrate, given how journalists find themselves under constant assault and press freedom is being eroded around the world. Last year was especially bleak, with some 67 journalists and media workers killed, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists. That figure represented a nearly 50 percent increase over the previous year’s toll.
Possible news tip:
Stumbled across this. It's a list of all the properties owned by the Province of #Ontario that are either up for sale, or recently sold. A big concentration are in #Toronto-Mississauga. Most are not listed on the open market.
It includes one listing considered for 41 acres of ravines and parks in the Spadina corridor lands (second link below) -- and also includes the building for the Toronto Archives.
Given there is parkland on the list and land operated by the City there may be a story here for #TorontoStar or other publications to follow-up on.
The official server being much too slow (sometimes more than an hour to fetch posts): https://bird.makeup
I put this server at the disposal of #journalists who would like / need to have access to #Twitter accounts from here in real time, contact me privately.
If these two things get implemented well, we then have people "beta test" and fine-tune them, we then "only" need to acquire the help of #journalists and #influenced in other media to continue enjoying exponential growth.
"Extremist Republicans have been enabled by media coverage that tries to split the difference, and treats what is essentially a hostage crisis created exclusively by one side as a normal, two-sided partisan squabble. Indeed, our top political reporters now insist that the onus is on Biden to solve the problem."
#Journalists, presenters and PR's. I have something huge coming in about a month's time, relevant to the queer community in the UK especially but also looking to reach worldwide press. I'm starting press pitching now and looking for major press, radio and TV talk show hosting (can also perform live music on air with a strings quartet). Contact me here or at skalymusic@gmail.com
This project was funded by supporters here on Mastodon and features 5 nonbinary artists, music and film crews.
@jon Good points regarding #journalists and media organisations. They will make or break the business model!
I don't know if twitter will survive or not, I'm happy if it does but with a different ethos (prob not with current owner).I'm also happy if it doesn't in its current form. Hope you don't mind that I tweeted it(with credit and mastodon link 😄) with whatever little reach i may have left there.
That's my shorthand for the organizing principle we most need in journalists covering the 2024 campaign. Not who has what chances of winning, but the consequences for American democracy. Not the odds, but the stakes.
This report from the Washington Post is getting there. Have a read of it and tell me if you see what I mean. https://wapo.st/41yXOmI [Gift link, no paywall]
Day 177 and #Twitter users are surprised that #ElonMusk’s decision to remove #bluecheck validation is causing chaos and the creation of impersonation accounts. That could never have been predicted?

Elon Musk’s Twitter Is Still Banning Journalists for Simply Doing Their Job
Wired reporter Dell Cameron was permanently suspended Wednesday after interviewing the man who hacked conservative activist Matt Walsh’s Twitter and email accounts
Cameron’s account was hit with a permanent suspension for supposedly violating Twitter’s policy against distributing “content obtained through hacking that contains private information,” according to Rolling Stone
#Twitter hypocrisy makes clear that a major cultural shift has occurred that nobody is really asking about.
Back when the Divine Comedy was written #hypocrites were consigned to the 6th of ten levels of hell. Obviously, practicing hypocrisy has lost some of its stigma.
I mean, the is NO REASON anyone of #moral fiber should still be on that website. But there they all are. #Journalists, watching their fellows get banned … essentially eating their own by staying on. Incredible.
I’d love to hear thoughts on the cause of this decreasing stigma of #hypocrisy.
In Oklahoma, a sheriff was caught discussing ways to murder journalists and lynch black people. If anyone tells you that fascism isn't alive in America, they need to wake up. Because it's here... and it's spreading.
