I highly recommend supporting the Standard Ebooks project. 📚
«Standard Ebooks is a volunteer-driven project that produces new editions of public domain e-books that are lovingly formatted, open source, free of copyright restrictions, and free of cost.»
I sometimes thought my father thought he could't die while he still had books on his pending pile (a stab at immortality I seem to be replicating)... so, it was strangely touching to see Tom Gauld has had similar thoughts.
The Banned Book Club is a project of the Digital Public Library of America. You download their Palace e-reader and choose Banned Book Club as your #library. It gives you access to all (most?) of them plus others
Hey I'm Alicia, an artist who really hasn't been feeling social media lately (especially IG and FB) so I thought I'd try Mastodon out and see if I like the simplicity of it more. I think I picked the perfect server, since I'm much more likely to be in my sunny garden than anywhere else. :BlobCat_Love: 🌞
#introduction Hi, I’m new here, but I’m giving this Mastodon thing a try! I’m an ecologist by training, currently teaching intro bio to undergrads. I’m an #insect enthusiast with particular love for #bees, #wasps and other garden critters. I have a chaotic good #vegetablegarden and plant lots of #nativeplants for the yard critters. I’m also a #twinmom and #vegetarian#cook. Don’t have a #dog yet but I love to see photos of your #dogs. What are you #reading right now?
A pack horse librarian delivering books in rural Kentucky in 1938. During the Great Depression, the Pack Horse Library Project was a Works Progress Administration (WPA) program in which the librarians, who were often called "book women" or "book ladies," delivered books to remote parts of Appalachia.
Of course Levar Burton wants you to read banned books. Heven Haile sits down with Levar and MoveOn’s Rahna Epting to talk about it.
“When I read Fahrenheit 451 for the first time,” LeVar Burton says, “I couldn’t imagine that situation in my reality. It was a shame, right? Wow. Those poor people in that misguided society. I live in that society now. That dystopian story has become my truth.”
'The Digital Public Library of America (DPLA) has launched The Banned Book Club... The Banned Book Club makes e-book versions of banned books available to readers in locations across the United States where titles have been banned. The e-books will be available to readers for free via the Palace e-reader app.'
🌌 On this day in 1978 the very first episode of the very first version of Douglas Adams' The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy went out on Radio 4. We can't tell you how proud that makes us.
Here's a lovely programme about Douglas and his creation, presented by his friend John Lloyd, that went out on the 40th anniversary.
AHHHHHH the new #Murderbot novel is out today and my preorder just arrived on my Kobo and why didn't I take today off work for #reading?????
If you haven't read any Murderbot by the amazing @marthawells yet this is your wake up call to pick up the first novella (All Systems Red). You'll know within the first chapter if it's not for you or if you're hooked for life and it will almost certainly be the latter.
My name's Megan, originally from Minnesota but living in the UK which is now home. Always something in my mind and will post about it here. Hope you have a wonderful day!
