We really need to rethink our capitalistic obsession of running things like a business. Cutting costs to increase profits obviously doesn't make sense in areas of education, healthcare, public utilities, and prisons, to name just a few.

Hell, Boeing is making a strong case that it doesn't even make sense for businesses to be run like a business, much less these public goods...

I hope this will bring more visibility to all the efforts and love that put on Mastodon

I wrote about how E2EE DMs are becoming a very real possibility for the social web. This would mean that users could potentially open DMs to mutuals across the social web without needing a separate account.

Very excited to see where @evan and @tomcoates take this research. More in the link below ๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿผ

โ€But Mastodon also has [...] a lot on its plate including integration with Threadsโ€œ

It's lines like this that makes me completely unable to take those calling for a hard fork of Mastodon seriously.

All Mastodon do for Threads is the same they for any fediverse developer having issues federating with them. (And there's certainly limits to that)

Along with perhaps writing more FEPs to standardize behaviour, which benefits everyone

@shoq yeah, that's why the 501(c)3 just setup by Mastodon is so important. It allows tax deductible donations to the project for US residents / tax citizens.

e.g., there's been recently two $100k donations (which is why Mastodon is hiring, iirc)

Surprisingly, however, OpenAI openly admits that it is unable to correct incorrect information on ChatGPT. Furthermore, the company cannot say where the data comes from or what data ChatGPT stores about individual people. The company is well aware of this problem, but doesnโ€™t seem to care. This is because you believe you live in a democracy when you actually live under capitalism.

PS. Not your fault; youโ€™ve been taught your whole life that the two are complementary when theyโ€™re diametrically-opposed.

Growth in plastic production alone will doom international climate goals. Even if every other source of greenhouse gas emissions โ€“ transportation, electricity, agriculture, heavy industry, etc. โ€“ were to miraculously and completely decarbonize in 2024, at current growth rates, primary plastic production alone would completely consume the global carbon budget as early as 2060 and no later than 2083

I wasn't able to attend the afternoon of proposals writing, but the morning of discussions and networking was fascinating and energising. It's so good to work on what brings us together, while drawing on our differences!

Now that quote posts are coming (confirmed by Renaud https://oisaur.com/@renchap/112299860209222424 ), I think it important that we have agreed upon acceptable usage.

Quote posts can be an amazing tool โ€“ there's a good reason they're so requested โ€“ but they also have the potential to add massive amounts of toxicity.

Gargron recognised this years ago: https://mastodon.social/@Gargron/99662106175542726

So here's my proposal for the Do's and Dont's of quote posting on Mastodon. Please boost!

Nobody seems to have noticed it but the Mastodon project have been granted funding by @NGIZero in the Entrust fund.

This is amazing, but the best part is that this funding is targeted at implementingโ€ฆ Quote Posts ๐ŸŽ‰

This effort started several months ago and we already did some preliminary work, but this will be a big feature for our next 4.4 version. This funding will cover the ActivityPub work, as well as backend, web frontend and official mobile app implementation.

I've been reading @404mediaco for a few months and just became an annual subscriber, for a few reasons:

  • Big Tech is good at PR (+tech startups emulate this) so we need independent journalists who understand that technical/social landscape

  • 404 Media is owned by the reporters, and we need more cooperative & collective news publications

  • They are covering things no one else does esp. about the impacts of AI on both our culture and basic safety

Disappointing:
the latest episode of Macrodose bills itself as a โ€˜roundtableโ€™ on

The Economics of the Green Transition

but spends two thirds of its 70 minutes on the wonkish dynamics of electricity markets before it gets to considering any of the foundational questions upon which the entire discussion ought to be based

โ€ฆI wish to goodness that discussions which purport to examine โ€˜green economicsโ€™ could lead with:

  1. Frame the scale of energy demand.
  2. Frame the time available to reconfigure it.
  3. What kinds of plan fit both?

And if their guests canโ€™t speak to those concerns, get better guests!

Fascinating article from IEEE Spectrum that discusses the carbon footprint of software and how we can both measure and improve it: https://spectrum.ieee.org/green-software

The benefit is not only less carbon, but following some of the principles that are outlined can decrease costs and improve efficiency.

The article references tools such as Firefox Profiler and Ecograder as well as an open source Sustainable Software Engineering course.
