I want Firefox to succeed more than ever and I support Mozilla finding better revenue sources than search engine default sales, but I do not support a $7M salary for its CEO.

I canceled my recurring donation to Mozilla because I need that money more than Mozillaโ€™s CEO needs that money.

If there is a direct funding option of developers working on Firefox, I will happily reallocate that money. Send me links.

No car manufacturer passed Mozillaโ€™s privacy audit, but Nissanโ€™s is just absurd.

Consent to sale of your DNA implied by riding in the vehicle is a consent mechanism I would love to have a sassy US judge comment upon.

The @EDPS missed an Internet meme moment to use the phrase โ€œour incredible journeyโ€ when announcing the discontinuation of EU Voice and EU Video. https://ourincrediblejourney.tumblr.com/

Was the experiment really โ€œa successful storyโ€ when the outcome was learning no EU agency cared about digital sovereignty enough to lead by example?

GDPR and DSA are great for changing the status quo of social networks.

But to build a better future, governments must fund, support, and use the alternatives.

๐Ÿšจ Urgent

The proposed EU eIDAS regulation will force web browsers to include government-issued certificate authorities. The key technology that makes HTTPS secure would have a backdoor to enable governments to intercept and decrypt your web traffic.

@mozilla, @internetsociety, @edri, @eff, and I have written the European Parliament about the disastrous consequences if this becomes law.

Please join me in emailing your MEPs today!

You arenโ€™t annoyed by cookie/consent screens.

You are annoyed by companies doing invasive acts that require them to obtain your consent.

You are annoyed by Google undermining browser technology that would have allowed your privacy preferences to be declared programmatically.

You are annoyed by surveillance capitalism being the primary monetization model online.

Get to the root of the problem.

TIL Apple already shipped a functional equivalent in Safari of the terrible Chrome Web Environment Integrity API proposal.

https://httptoolkit.com/blog/apple-private-access-tokens-attestation/

It is less of a threat because Safari does not have Chromiumโ€™s market dominance, but itโ€™s still bad and we should be demanding Apple remove it too. @webkit

I am grateful for Firefox recognizing the threat this proposal is to the open Web and opposing it, but the opposition wonโ€™t matter unless people use a different browser.

Why can EU companies not use US-based cloud infrastructure and SaaS products?

Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act allows the US government to force US companies to share foreign customer data without a warrant or disclosure.

There is no way to reconcile US govt surveillance with the EUโ€™s Charter of Fundamental Rights on privacy.

More on 702:

The US Congress wants its govt to be able to force companies to surrender foreign customer data. So it reauthorized 702.

The US Congress does not want other govts to be able to force companies in their countries to surrender US American customer data. So it might force TikTok to be owned by a US corp. https://www.theverge.com/2024/4/20/24135163/tiktok-ban-divest-bytedance-house-foreign-aid-package

The EU fought US govt spying by strengthening privacy rights. The US should fight Chinese govt spying similarly if it actually cares about human rights.

Molly Holzschlag, the fairy godmother of the Web, has died.

I remember the first time I met her at a Web dev conference. She chatted with me for a half hour, telling stories of browser rivalries and HTML5โ€™s renegade group that saved us all from XHTML. We ran into each other several times over the years. She always was kind, encouraging, and genuinely interested in what I had to say. She gave us all so much. ๐Ÿ’”

In August, Norge started fining Meta daily for GDPR violations. Instead of complying, Meta decided it was more profitable to pay the fine.

So the European Data Protection Board just expanded the ruling to all of the EU and issued a permanent ban on Metaโ€™s use of behavioral advertising. It does not even get a chance to have users opt in. This is wild.

Meta now risks fines up to 4% of its global turnover.

How do you show your stated love for Christ other than mentioning it in your bio?

The people who have harmed me the most in life also loved Christ, so please understand why I need some more information.

After 3 logicboard replacements over 6 weeks, my Samsung washing machine seems to be working again.

Getting it reconnected to my Wi-Fi so that I get the push notifications when itโ€™s done instead of the awful 60 seconds of Samsinging was nearly painful enough to make me start an open source smart home appliance company.

Jeremiah,
@Jeremiah@alpaca.gold avatar

I regret to inform that after the 7th load of laundryโ€”an hour after my postโ€”my Samsung washing machine broke again.

Samsung is refunding the "repair" cost (~5000 SEK) and giving up. The washing machine is 3 years old. The EU mandate of a 10 year warranty on the motor will not spare the planet from this e-waste since some other component has failed.

I cannot recommend against Samsung appliances strongly enough.
