Rant about the world of social media and marketing:

My latest (very recent) shock was receiving an email from a digital painting software company (I can't name them) asking me my price to switch my entire workflow to their proprietary product and announce it on my channels.

Of course I refused.

I'm still 100% committed to Free/Libre&Open-Source Software. But it made me realise that these days even profiles without a huge internet presence are getting paid to use and advocate things. Meh 😔

The recent excitement surrounding Thread's arrival on the Fediverse is concerning. To understand why this is not a good idea, consider their economic interest in harvesting data, their poor moderation, and their manipulations. Nothing good can come from their federation. Don't roll out the red carpet for them.

@ErikUden XMPP is brought up a lot as an analogy to Threads implementing ActivityPub, but I don't think it works. Google dropping XMPP support didn't destroy it, XMPP still exists today. It still had all the same users it did before Google joined the network after Google left. People don't still use XMPP today like they used to because it didn't adapt to the features people wanted in a modern chat platform. That's why we have Matrix now instead.

I think ActivityPub does have the features people want though, at least right now, and it seems very flexible to the addition of new ones.

What is the hashtag that you would recommend artists to use to say that their art is not created with AI?

oblomov,
@oblomov@sociale.network avatar

@davidrevoy I recommend NOT tagging it in any machine-recognizable way. As the Internet gets flooded by AI-generated content, funding material that can be used to train models becomes more and more difficult. Tagging it in an easily recognizable way makes it easier to be found and fed into the next generation models.
I put a more detailed argument about this here
http://wok.oblomov.eu/tecnologia/not-by-ai/
although I think the machine is down ATM 8-/

scopelmatt,
@scopelmatt@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@davidrevoy I think that this might be counterproductive, as it might create an easy-to-mine hashtag for AIs to be trained upon.

@jtr Hey, thank you.For real reasons, no idea. I don't think my involvement in Free Libre and Open Source for more than a decade is part of it. My blog post against NFT, maybe.Same for my article explaining why I'll not use generative AI images, and what I think of AI artists. But these are assumptions,I never got a clear feedback about the reasons from the haters.It's random. I'm just visible and at one point I attract also this tiny percentage of toxic behavior. It's probably just a statistic.

@davidrevoy I believe most of this stylus support was written by @jose_exposito. Maybe he can help fix this?

Also, my reading of https://gitlab.com/cki-project/kernel-ark/-/commits/fedora-6.5/drivers/hid/hid-input.c makes me think that it was busted by this commit?

@Whidou regarding the images in the back (freenode …): did you notice that the Founder of Freenet recently decided to use the name Freenet for his new non-privacy-related crypto-contract system?

We had to rename to due to that.

@davidrevoy Love your work, David. And it’s definitely not your fault that we live in the worst possible timeline but what’s missing in that image is the hand from Google giving Mozilla half a billion dollars.

(Mozilla exists on roughly half a billion dollars from Google every year. Sadly, they’re not so much adversaries as partners.)

Think about what Google did to email. SMTP is an open protocol like ActivityPub.
Now think about what Google did to XMPP, also an open protocol.
I bet your answer is "I don't know anything about SMTP or XMPP" and that's the problem, big companies "adopt the protocol" then after getting all the users onboard, they deprecate the open protocol using private APIs instead.

@lucas Thanks! Oh yes, I wouldn't recommend a long travel like that to see the exhibition; maybe it worth a 1h30 car travel, but not more. I hope it will give ideas to more events; the Creative Commons license of the artworks allow them to do that and it also protect them from copyright infringements (the printed version in France starts to be more popular in the comic bubble afaik than the webcomic version).

Kicking Erwin Schrödinger out of my idols. Not because he chose a cat for his thought experiment, but because of one thing I learnt: he sexually abused children and kept a diary about it. 🤮 Src: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Erwin_Schr%C3%B6dinger#Sexual_abuse

RGBes,

@davidrevoy Celebrate ideas, never people: people tend to have many bad ideas beyond the few good ones for which they have become famous. Schrödinger is a good example of that: he was a horrible person.

@odysseywestra Thank you so much for your words, and also for supporting my work since the start of Pepper&Carrot, 10 years ago. 10 years soon! I can't believe it myself.
Right now it looks my brain wants to start Mini Fantasy Theater and ending Pepper&Carrot simultaneously. I jump on one when I block on the other, and ideas rejected for one feed the other. An interesting period of overlap. 😆

Their naming convention is a bit confusing, they have many products named bamboo, and ink , this one is the one that has a built-in battery you can charge with Usb-C.

@davidrevoy it's just kinda sad because they're being set on fire by a bored billionare :(

but at the same time it's great to see actual free and open platforms grow, most people who are joining right now have no idea how much freedom they gain, how much more privacy they have, the fact there's no ads without needing an adblocker because you're NOT the product but an actual customer, something that has become increasingly rare in today's megacorp capitalist world
